Volleyball Drops 3-2 Matchup at SAGU

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – The Mid-America Christian volleyball team nearly came away with a three-set sweep at Southwestern Assemblies of God, but the Lady Lions were able to pull out a close third set before gaining all of the momentum over the final two sets to hand the Evangels a 3-2 defeat inside the Sheaffer Center on Saturday afternoon.

    • Set One
      • SW Assemblies of God jumped out to a commanding 9-3 lead in the early portions of the opening set before the Evangels chipped away at it with a 4-1 run, starting with a kill from Hanna Foecker bring it to 10-7 game.
      • The Lady Lions managed to build its lead back up and take their largest lead of the set at 17-10.
      • After trading the next two points, Mid-America Christian stormed its way back by scoring seven unanswered as a Hanna Foecker service ace tied it up at 18.
      • The two teams stayed even over the next eight allies, but MACU finished strong by scoring the final three points, ending it on a Kaylie Walker service ace to seal the 25-22 win.
    • Set Two
      • Mid-America Christian got off to a stellar start in set two, opening with a 9-1 run, getting a pair of kills from Foecker and one from Kaylie Walker.
      • The Lions clawed back by taking five of the next six to bring it to 10-6 before the Evangels pulled the lead back with a 5-1 run of their own, including scoring four in a row capped off on an assisted block from Cloie Mitchell and Vanessa Moreira to make it a 15-7 match.
      • The Evangels wouldn't allow SAGU to come back as MACU cruised to a 25-16 victory.
    • Set Three
      • Southwestern Assemblies managed to get a little breathing room early in the set, but the Evangels were able to score three in a row off approaching the midway point off of kills from Cloie Mitchell and Maddie Callicoat to go with a Maegan Plunk service ace to draw it even at 9-9.
      • The Evangels managed to build their lead out to 18-15, but SAGU managed to counter with a 7-2 run to take a late 22-20 lead.
      • Mid-America Christian managed to score three of the next four off of kills from Moreira and Lena Stockhammer along with an Ava Meyers attack error to draw it back even at 23-all.
      • SAGU managed to score the final two points of the set off of kills from Abby Wells and Emma Tompkins to give the Lady Lions their first set win of the match at 25-23.
    • Set Four
      • SAGU jumped out to a 9-4 advantage before MACU tallied a pair of points, one a Faith Foutch service ace to bring it back to within three.
      • The Lady Lions countered with a nearly unstoppable run, scoring eight straight points to take a commanding 17-6 lead.
      • The Evangels were unable to make a dent into the deficit as SAGU ran away with a 25-10 set four win.
    • Set Five
      • The Lady Lions scratched across five of the first seven points before the Evangels tallied three straight, getting kills from Allison Porter and Callicoat to draw it even at 5-all.
      • SAGU countered with a six-unanswered run to put the match out of reach with an 11-5 lead.
      • A block by Callicoat and Porter stopped the run, but the Lady Lions tallied the final four points to secure the 15-6 win.
  • MATCH NOTES
    • Mid-America Christian could only manage 40 kills on a .077 attack percentage, its second-lowest clip of the season while Southwestern Assemblies of God came away with 48 kills on a .197 attack percentage.
    • The Lions were able to limit Hanna Foecker, the NAIA kills leader to just 12 kills on a .174 attack percentage.
    • Lena Stockhammer finished with 31 assists while Maegan Plunk turned in 30 digs on the defense.
    • MACU narrowly missed getting its first win at Southwestern Assemblies of God since Nov. 15, 2012.
    • The Evangels wrapped up a 10-match road stand with a 7-3 record while facing four of the top five teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference in their home venues.

  • Mid-America Christian will return back to the friendly confines of the Gaulke Activity Center on Tuesday, Sept. 21, but it will not get any easier as the Evangels will welcome No. 23 Oklahoma City for a 7 p.m. first serve.
