Henry’s Two Goals Propels Evangels to 3-0 Victory over Oklahoma City in SAC Opener

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Mid-America Christian women's soccer team got back on-track in its Sooner Athletic Conference opener at the Evangels cruised to a 3-0 victory at Oklahoma City on Tuesday night at Brian Harvey Field.

  • First Half
    • Mid-America Christian was able to take advantage of their first opportunity they had in the 15th minute when Kyleigh Rushing was able to break down the right sideline to find Kelsey Henry on the right side of the box, firing a shot that glanced off an OCU defender and ricochet into the top left corner of the goal to give MACU the 1-0 advantage.
    • MACU was only able to muster one more shot on-goal the rest of the half, coming off the foot of Alissa Taylor in the 31st minute.
    • Oklahoma City's best chance at an equalizer came with 8:45 to go, but Jennifer Starwalt was able to snag Sofia Carvajal Granados' shot on-goal to allow MACU to hold a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
  • Second Half
    • The Evangels were able to put in an insurance goal early in the period as a breakaway by Rushing down the middle allowed her to find Kadin Stinson breaking toward the right side of the goal box. Stinson's cross found the foot of Abigail McCain near the left post brought the score to 2-0 in the 50th minute.
    • In the 66th minute, Mid-America Christian extended it to 3-0 when Marga Franco's right side corner kick found the head of Henry, bouncing through to the back of the net for her second goal of the match.
    • Oklahoma City's best chance came in the 82nd minute when Millie Templeton launched a 30-yard shot that bounced off the top of the crossbar. The Evangels held off a flurry of OCU shots late to secure the shutout victory.
MATCH NOTES
  • Oklahoma City was able to outshoot MACU 12-11 for the match, but the Evangels were effectively able to put seven shots on-goal to just six for the Stars.
  • Kelsey Henry led the way with her first multi-goal match of the season, increasing her season total to four off of three shots, two of which that were on-frame finding the back of the net.
  • Abigail McCain carded her third goal of the 2021 campaign.
  • The three MACU assists came from Kyleigh Rushing, Kadin Stinson and Marga Franco.
  • Mid-America Christian extended its win streak to four against the Oklahoma City Stars since the start of the 2019 campaign.
