Softball Bounces Back in Game Two, Splits Doubleheader at Southwestern

WINFIELD, Kan. – After suffering its first loss of the season in a 4-3 decision in the opener of the doubleheader, the Mid-America Christian softball team put together a strong bounce-back in game two to come away with a 12-4 victory over Southwestern at the Broadway Sports Complex on Wednesday.

TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian was able to take advantage of some stellar small ball to generate a pair of early runs. After Cailey Parsells reached on a single to right, Mikaylee Allen reached on a single up the middle and stole second to put two runners in scoring position with no out. On Kassie Martin's grounder to third, Parsells scored on the play at the plate and then Martin got caught in a rundown between first and second to allow Allen to score as well, making it a 2-0 game in the first.
  • The Builders got a run back in the bottom of the first. After Alexus Johnson reached on a fielding error and Kallie Albrecht reached on a bunt single, both runners were moved into scoring position on a groundout to second. Hannah Hlavenka reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases before Loren Wright lined a single to left to score Johnson from third to close the gap to 2-1.
  • The Evangels were able to limit the damage to just one run after starting pitcher Rachel Eggleston was able to get Isabel Lytle to ground into a 6-4-3 double play on the ensuing at-bat to end the first inning.
  • Southwestern put together a three-run fourth inning to take the lead. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lytle scored on a wild pitch to tie it before pinch-hitter Kelsey McDaniel drove a two-RBI single to center to make it a 4-2 SWC advantage.
  • The Builders mounted a major threat in the bottom of the fifth when they loaded the bases with nobody out off a pair of singles and a walk. However, Eggleston was able to buckle down by getting a foulout to first, a strikeout and a 6-3 groundout to get out of the jam.
  • MACU got a run back in the top of the sixth when Cailey Parsells reached on an infield single and got down to second on a groundout. With Martin batting, Parsells was able to steal third base and after a throwing error by the catcher getting away from the third baseman was able to take off for home and get past the tag of the catcher on the relay back to home plate.
  • However, the Evangels came up short in their comeback. In the top of the seventh, Karlee Danielson slapped a two-out single to left to get a baserunner on, but Megan Widener popped out to the second baseman on the next at-bat to wrap-up the game.  
GAME NOTES
  • Southwestern scored its four runs on 10 hits with an error while the Evangels scored their three runs on six hits with an error as well.
  • Kassie Martin and Cailey Parsells both put together a strong game offensively by combining to go 4-for-6, but the rest of the Evangels batting order struggled against SWC starter Alexus Johnson, going just 2-for-20.
  • Redshirt freshman pitcher Rachel Eggleston suffered her first loss of the season, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

  • MACU opened the second game with a monster inning, scoring five runs in the first frame. After Cailey Parsells singled and stole second, she got down to third on a passed ball and came across to score on another passed ball to Mikaylee Allen to bring it to a 1-0 lead.
  • After Allen and Martin reached on walks and were able to get to second and third off of stolen bases, Camenda Osborn plated Allen on an RBI groundout to the pitcher to stretch it to a 2-0 lead.
  • Following a walk by Olivia Roberts to put runners at the corners, the Evangels notched RBIs on three of the next four at-bats as RBI singles by Janessa Larman and Rachel Humburg scored Martin and Roberts to bring it to 4-0 before Megan Widener capped the scoring on a SAC fly to left to bring home Larman.
  • However, Southwestern was able to get three runs back in the bottom of the first. After loading the bases with two outs, Isabel Lytle scored a bases clearing double to the left-center field gap to cut the Builders deficit to 5-3.
  • The Evangels immediately regained a five-run lead in the top of the third. With two outs, Olivia Roberts singled to left and Larman was hit-by-pitch before Adyson Bradley slapped an RBI single to left and Humburg singled to left-center to score Larman. Parsells wrapped up the inning by drawing a walk with the bases loaded to set the score to 8-3.
  • The Builders threatened to make a major comeback by loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the third and pushed one on a Kelsey Daniel RBI single, but starting pitcher Avery Schneringer was able to induce a 4-3 groundout to limit the damage to just one run.
  • Mid-America Christian added two insurance runs in the top of the fourth on a two-RBI triple by Parsells and two more in the fifth on a two-RBI double by Larman to come away with the 12-4 victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its 12 runs on 12 hits with no errors while Southwestern pushed across its four runs on 10 hits with zero errors.
  • The Evangels won their first game via the eight-run rule of the season with MACU's last win by eight or more runs coming in an 8-0 victory against Carolina (N.C.) in the NCCAA World Series Semifinal in Easley, S.C. on May 19, 2021.
  • Cailey Parsells and Janessa Larman led the MACU bats by driving in three runs apiece. Parsells went 2-for-2 with a triple, a pair of walks, a run and a stolen base while Larman swatted 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of runs scored.
  • Rachel Humburg became the first MACU player to record three hits in a game this season, going 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
  • Avery Schneringer earned her first career win in a complete game start, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
  • By getting the split, the Evangels moved to 18-11 all-time against Southwestern and have won nine of the last 11 meetings.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will now prepare for its co-hosted tournament, the NAIA Invitational being held at the Chickasha Sports Complex in Chickasha, Okla. The Evangels will play four games between Feb. 18-19, opening with a matchup against York (Neb.) at 11 a.m. on Friday.
