Stinson Brace Leads Women’s Soccer Past SAGU

OKLAHOMA CITY – In a pivotal Sooner Athletic Conference matchup at the Dill Soccer Field on Saturday night, the MACU women's soccer picked up a crucial 2-1 victory behind Kadin Stinson's two-goal effort over Southwestern Assemblies of God.

SCORING SUMMARY
  • 1st Half – MACU – 10:33 – Goal: Kadin Stinson (4), Assist: Bruna FaleiroMACU 1, SAGU 0
  • 2nd Half – MACU – 56:51 – Goal: Kadin Stinson (5) – MACU 2, SAGU 0
  • 2nd Half – SAGU – 71:52 – Goal: Stephanie Hernandez (12) – MACU 2, SAGU 1
MATCH SUMMARY
  • While both teams struggled to muster any sort of attack through the first 10 minutes of the match, Mid-America Christian (10-2-1, 3-1-1 SAC) broke through in the 11th minute when Annika Gerdau led a breakaway down the left side before crossing it into the middle of the box for Bruna Faleiro. The header from Faleiro pinged off the right post, but it rebounded right to Kadin Stinson as her six-yarder from the middle deflected off the bottom of the crossbar and across the line before the keeper could snag it, making it a 1-0 game.
  • Southwestern Assemblies of God (10-3, 4-1 SAC) had two dangerous scoring opportunities in the 13th and the 35th minutes. In the 13th minute, Stephanie Hernandez got open after making a move past a MACU defender but her open attempt was weakly placed for an easy save for Rachel Torres. In the 35th minute, Anessa Garcia was able to get open toward the left post on a breakaway down the right side, relayed by Hernandez. However, MACU quickly thwarted it as Alison Mora came sliding in to block the shot attempt.
  • The Evangels had several more opportunities with shots on-goal throughout the half, but SAGU goalkeeper Zoe Boldt made five saves to keep the MACU lead to just 1-0 heading into the half.
  • On MACU's first shot attempt of the second half, the Evangels put away the would-be game-winner. After Stinson tracked down a high-bouncer in the midfield, the speedy forward zipped past her defender and from the top right corner of the 18-yard box, float an incredible strike into the top left corner to set the score to 2-0.
  • The Lady Lions managed to cut into the MACU advantage with just over 18 minutes left when Hernandez received a pass at the top of the right side of the 18-yard box. A moment later, Hernandez broke into the right side past her defender before rifling a 15-yarder that bounced off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net, setting the score to 2-1.
  • After allowing SAGU to get it back to a one-goal game, the MACU defense stiffened up the rest of the match, not allowing the Lady Lions to put another shot on-goal the rest of the match as the Evangels came away with the victory.
MATCH NOTES
  • Despite the one-goal differential, Mid-America Christian controlled the match from start to finish, outshooting Southwestern Assemblies of God 13-10, but held a commanding 9-2 edge in shots on-goal.
  • With her fourth and fifth goals of the season, Kadin Stinson moved into a tie for the team-lead in goals scored with Madison Chavez and Gladis Avalos.
  • Faleiro's off-post assist marked her fifth dime of the season, also moving her into a three-way tie for the team-lead with Chavez and Annika Gerdau.
  • Jasmine Morales led the offensive attack with three shots, two were on-goal.
  • Rachel Torres improved to 10-2 in-goal while tallying a save and conceding a goal.
  • Mid-America Christian did a remarkable job defensively of shutting down the NAIA Offensive Player of the Week Anna Bewley, who came into the match with 10 goals scored in her previous three matches. Bewley was held to just three shots, none of which were on-frame.
  • The Evangels held the high-powered SAGU offense that had scored two or more goals per game in each of the last seven games while the 10 shots allowed are the fewest the Lady Lions had attempted since a 1-0 loss to Texas A&M-San Antonio on Sept. 9.
  • Mid-America Christian improved to 17-2 all-time against SAGU while earning its eighth-straight victory in the series.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will now prepare to hit the road on Tuesday as the Evangels will head to Plainview, Texas for a 5 p.m. kickoff against Wayland Baptist.
