No. 19 Women’s Basketball Tops Our Lady of the Lake Before Thanksgiving Break

OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 19 MACU women's basketball continued to stay red hot in its final game before the Thanksgiving break as the Evangels dominated Our Lady of the Lake to the tune of an 89-48 victory on Monday night.

Before the contest began, the Evangels honored senior guard Jaci Calavan, who scored her 1000th collegiate career point just a few weeks earlier in the MACU Classic.

GAME SUMMARY
  • First Quarter
    • Both teams struggled on the offensive end to begin the contest before a Deja Williams three at the 7:46 mark gave Our Lady of the Lake (1-2) the first lead of the contest.
    • With just over seven minutes left, Mid-America Christian (6-0) finally got onto the board on Jaci Calavan's layup off Kylee Scheer's offensive board, jumpstarting a 12-2 run capped off on Shy Christopher's fastbreak layup off Mia Smith's steal and dish to make it 12-5 with 3:45 to go.
    • After Deja Hinson's jumper briefly stopped the run, MACU built its lead out to double-digits off back-to-back Scheer three-point bombs to bring it to 18-7 with 1:36 to go.
    • The Saints scored four of the next six to knock MACU's edge down to single-digits at 20-11 at the end of one.
  • Second Quarter
    • Mid-America Christian's defense completely shutdown Our Lady of the Lake in the second quarter, holding the Saints scoreless over a 9:08 stretch.
    • During that stretch, the Evangels went on a 22-unanswered run as Kayla Highfill buried a pair of free throws to make it 42-11 with 1:15 left.
    • A Kalista Niu three with 52 seconds left finally snapped OLLU's scoreless streak as the Saints went on a 6-0 run capped off on Julia Plata's three-point play to close the gap to 42-17 heading into the break.
  • Third Quarter
    • The Evangels continued to stay hot coming out of the break, scoring the first nine points as a Calavan three followed by back-to-back Scheer steals and fastbreak lay-ins brought the score to 51-17 with 8:15 to go.
    • OLLU managed to knock the lead to below 30 on three different occasions over the next five minutes, the last coming on a Tiffany Lopez midrange jumper to make it 60-32 with just over three-and-a-half left.
    • The Evangels put together a great run toward the end as sensational ball movement around the perimeter set up Scheer for a wide open three in the left corner, igniting a 12-0 streak capped off on Christopher intercepting a pass at the top of the key for an easy fastbreak layup to set the score to 72-32 with 49 seconds remaining.
    •  Our Lady of the Lake scored the final three off a free throw and an offensive rebound and putback by Lopez with 22 seconds left to make it a 72-35 game at the end of three.
  • Fourth Quarter
    • Mid-America Christian slowly built its lead out to as much as 43 on Ashley Hopper's offensive board and put-in to bring the score to 82-39 nearing the five-minute mark.
    • The Saints scored the next four to knock the Evangels' edge to under 40, but Calavan once again drained a wide-open three from the left wing off Smith's drive and dish to to put it at 85-42 with 3:41 to go.
    • Our Lady of the Lake could only knock the deficit to below 40 twice the rest of the way as Sydney Adee ended the contest with an offensive board and putback in a tightly contested lane to wrap-up the 89-48 final.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian continued to put up phenomenal shooting numbers as the Evangels shot 34-of-69 (49.3 percent) from the floor and 10-for-23 (43.5 percent) from three while the Evangels made all 11 of their foul shots.
  • Defensively, the Evangels held Our Lady of the Lake to 19-for-48 (39.6 percent) shooting, just 4-of-10 (40 percent) from three while the Saints converted just 6-for-9 (66.7 percent) from the stripe.
  • The biggest difference in the contest is the Saints struggled to hold onto the ball against MACU's aggressive pressure defense, giving the ball away 29 times for 42 MACU points off turnovers while the Evangels turned it over just 15 times for 18 OLLU points.
  • The Evangels also thoroughly controlled the glass with a 42-25 rebounding margin with a 15-5 edge in offensive rebounds.
  • Kylee Scheer recorded her first career 30-point game as a member of the Evangels to lead MACU's offensive efforts, scoring her 30 points on 11-of-15 shooting, 6-for-8 of which came from the three-point arc while finishing just a board shy of a double-double at nine rebounds to go with four steals.
  • Jaci Calavan also put together a big offensive game, scoring 22 points on 9-for-17 from the field, 4-of-8 from three and converted both foul shots. Calavan also tallied four boards and four assists to go with a trio of steals.
  • Shy Christopher was the only other Evangel to break into double-digits with 14 points on 6-of-16 shooting while also producing a solid floor game at four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Ashley Hopper provided a spark off the MACU bench with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting and 2-for-2 from the line to go with six rebounds.
  • In just the two programs' second ever meeting, the Evangels picked up their first ever win over the relatively strong Our Lady of the Lake program that had made it to 10 NAIA National Tournaments over the last 13 years.
  • The beat went on for MACU's point differential as the Evangels are currently outscoring their opponents by 39.9 points per game through the first six games of the season.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will now begin making its preparations for the start of Sooner Athletic Conference play next week as the Evangels will open league play at Wayland Baptist on Thursday, Nov. 30. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. inside the Hutcherson Center.
