Men’s Basketball Blazes Way to UNT-Dallas, Home on Saturday vs. SAGU

OKLAHOMA CITY – Coming off a crucial home win on Saturday, the MACU men's basketball team will look to carry the momentum into a huge road contest at UNT-Dallas on Thursday night before the Evangels will return home to face off against rival Southwestern Assemblies of God on Saturday.

The tip-off against the Trailblazers on Thursday is slated for 7:45 p.m. inside the Trinity Basin Preparatory Athletic Complex while Saturday is slated for a 3:45 p.m. tip in the Gaulke Activity Center.

    • Mid-America Christian picked up a pivotal bounce-back home win against Texas Wesleyan on Saturday as the Evangels held on for an 80-79 victory to complete the season sweep against the Rams.
    • By getting the victory, MACU stayed in-the-hunt for qualifying for the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament. The Evangels currently sit a game back of Southwestern Christian for the No. 8 spot in the league standings with four games remaining in the regular season slate. In order to qualify for the SAC tourney, teams must finish in the top eight of the league standings.
    • The Evangels have been getting sensational play out of redshirt sophomore guard Eylan Goodwyn as of late. Last week, the Gladewater, Texas product put together a huge week, averaging 23.0 ppg on a blistering 63 percent shooting clip, including an astounding 70 percent (7-of-10) from three-point range to go with 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. In the win over the Rams, Goodwyn poured in a career-high 31 points on 11-for-14 shooting and went 4-of-5 from downtown.
    • Trevonte Doolittle has also provided an offensive spark for the Evangels over the last seven games. After scoring in double-figures in just two of his first 15 games, Doolittle has reached double-digits in six of the last seven, putting up a 14-point performance win the win against Texas Wesleyan. During the stretch, Doolittle is averaging 11.7 ppg on a 58.7 percent shooting clip, including 52.9 percent from three as well as 82.6 percent from the charity stipe. Doolittle has also dished out a team-best 17 assists (2.4 apg) in the same time frame.

    • Currently the third-ranked team in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings, UNT-Dallas is coming off a tough offensive showing against Oklahoma City on Monday as the Trailblazers fell inside the Trinity Basin Preparatory Athletic Complex by a score of 59-56.
    • Despite UNTD being just the seventh-rated team in the SAC in scoring average (78.7 ppg), the Trailblazers have been solid defensively, ranking fifth in the conference in scoring defense at 73.7 ppg.
    • The Trailblazers feature one of the top players in the league in junior forward Jules Moor. The Stephen F. Austin transfer is one of just two players in the SAC that ranks in the top five in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.5 ppg (4th) and 8.4 rpg (3rd).
    • While the Trailblazers have been one of the top team in the SAC this season, Mid-America Christian has fared well against UNTD as the Evangels are 4-0 since the two teams started facing each other last season. In their meeting inside the Gaulke Activity Center on Jan. 7, the Evangels played one of their best games of the season as five MACU players scored in double-figures, led by Tarrence Gaines with 12 points and 10 rebounds in a 72-55 victory.

    • Southwestern Assemblies of God is currently in-contention for one of the top four spots in the SAC, but the Lions faced a setback on Monday when John Brown came into the Sheaffer Center and pulled out a 70-69 win to knock SAGU a half-game back of the Stars for fourth in the league.
    • While the Lions rank sixth in the SAC in scoring average at 82.3 ppg, SAGU is one of the best defensive teams in the conference, ranking third in scoring defense at 71.9 ppg and possesses the best field goal percentage defense in the league at 40.7. The Lions have also been a stellar team on the glass, outrebounding their opponents by a SAC-best 6.8 rpg.
    • Leading the Lions is the reigning SAC Player of the Week in Cortland Blake, who enters the contest by averaging 15.8 ppg on a 50.2 percent shooting clip while also pulling down six boards per contest on the block. Overall, the Lions are a balanced offensive squad with four players averaging in double-digits and five athletes scoring nine or more points per contest.
    • Even though Mid-America Christian leads the all-time series, the Evangels will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak to SAGU. In their previous meeting at SAGU on Jan. 7, kept it close for most of the game as MACU trailed by just three at 52-49 with nine minutes to go, but the Lions clamped down on the Evangels defensively the rest of the way pull out the 72-61 win.
