OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU volleyball program is adding some experienced coaching to its staff for the upcoming 2023 season as Rachael Self will serve as the program's new Graduate Assistant Coach.
Self brings a strong core of coaching experience to Mid-America Christian, serving as an assistant coach for the Oklahoma Charge 17UA Girls Team since 2017 and also been an assistant coach at Mount Saint Mary High School since 2015.
"Coach Self brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our program," said MACU head coach Holly McKamie. "I have known her for several years and I have admired her coaching style and relationships she has with her players. But above all of this, Coach Self has a deep Christian faith and will be an excellent mentor for our young women."
In her seven years with Mount Saint Mary, she has helped lead the Rockets to three 5A State Championships in 2016, 2021 and 2022.
"I have always loved playing and coaching the volleyball game," said Self. "I have known Coach McKamie for a few years now and have admired her coaching style. She is what attracted me to this position and I look forward to working with her. I hope to bring a strong defensive mindset to the table, teach the strategy and technique to become a strong defensive team. I look forward to being a part of the MACU program."
Self has coached along with McKamie in the Oklahoma Charge volleyball club, posting some recent success after putting together a 36-18 record during the 2021-22 season and a 50-13 record during the 2020-21 campaign.
In her collegiate playing career, Self competed for NOC-Enid during the 2010-11 seasons before closing out her career with Northwestern Oklahoma State, who was making the transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II level at the time. In her senior season with the Rangers in 2013, Self finished second on the team in digs with 177.
Mid-America Christian will officially open the 2023 season at the JBU Golden Eagle Invitational, challenging Oklahoma Wesleyan, Bethel (Kan.) and Texas A&M-Texarkana from Aug. 18-19 in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
