Women’s Soccer Wins Third Straight, Flies Past Friends 1-0

WICHITA, Kan. – The MACU women's soccer team picked up another high-quality win against a recent rival on Saturday night as the Evangels were able to come away with a 1-0 victory at Adair-Austin Stadium.

SCORING SUMMARY
  • 2nd Half – MACU – 47:03 – Goal: Madison Chavez (1) – MACU 1, FRND - 0
MATCH SUMMARY
  • In the 27th minute, Friends had the first great opportunity to take the lead when a foul was called on the Evangels inside the 18-yard box, setting up Hanon Nakagami for the penalty kick. However, Rachel Torres made one of the biggest saves of her career when she dove and stopped the shot aimed toward the lower right post, keeping it a scoreless game.
  • Neither team was able to get an opportunity on-goal in the rest of the half as the two teams went into the locker room tied at 0-0.
  • While the Evangels only had one opportunity on-goal in the second half, MACU took advantage of it.
  • In the 47th minute, Daniela Paez lofted a deep ball from the left back position into the 18-yard box, bouncing off the shoulder of an Evangels player before Madison Chavez crashed in and knocked a 12-yarder inside the left post, just barely getting her shot off before Friends keeper Nia Baker could slide in and stop the ball at the point of attack to make it a 1-nil game.
  • The only attempt the Falcons were able to get on-target came in the 68th minute off the foot from Gianna Honda from 30-yards out, but it bounced right into Rachel Torres for the easy save.
  • While Friends was able to make a few offensive pushes, the Evangels defense was able to contain the Falcons as MACU held on for the 1-0 victory.
MATCH NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian managed to outshoot Friends 13-6 for the match, but both teams struggled to place shots on-target as each team finished with a pair of on-frame attempts.
  • Freshman Madison Chavez led MACU's offensive efforts with not just her first career goal with MACU, but also attempted a team-high three shots along with Gladis Avalos.
  • Rachel Torres notched back-to-back shutouts for the first time in her MACU career, finishing with a pair of saves to improve to 3-0 in-net this season.
  • The Evangels improved to 3-2 all-time against Friends since 2013 as the two teams competed against each other for the third time in the last three years. MACU fell 3-1 at Adair-Austin Stadium last season on Aug. 27 after getting a 5-3 win against the Falcons at the Dill Soccer Field on Aug. 31, 2021.
  • MACU is currently on their first three-game win streak to open the season since the 2020 campaign, a year where the Evangels won their first four matches against Bacone (Okla.), Texas A&M-Texarkana, Arizona Christian and Manhattan Christian (Kan.).
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will wrap-up its three-game road swing on Saturday, Sept. 2 as the Evangels will head to Hobbs, N.M. for a 2 p.m. kickoff (3 p.m. CST) at Bob Moran Field against the University of the Southwest.
