Six Break into Double-Digits, No. 17 Women’s Basketball Bounces Back against Central Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 17 MACU women's basketball team coming off its biggest loss of the season bounced back in a big way inside the Gaulke Activity Center on Saturday as six Evangels broke into double-figure scoring in a 104-55 victory over Central Christian.
 
TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • First Quarter
    • Mid-America Christian (10-2, 4-2 SAC) got off to a quick start through the first two-and-a-half minutes by scoring six of the first eight as a Kylee Scheer steal and layup in the backcourt to go with a foul made it an 8-2 game at the 8:28 mark.
    • Central Christian (4-9, 0-7 SAC) managed to keep it to a two-possession game over the next few minutes as a Shamaya Brown running right-wing jumper off a press break closed it to 10-6 with just under six minutes left, but the Evangels stretched their advantage to double-digits at 5:19 to go on threes from Scheer and Karley Miller on back-to-back possessions.
    • The Tigers scored the next five to cut the MACU edge in-half, but the Evangels scored eight of the final 10 points over the final three minutes to hold a 24-13 lead at the end of one.
  • Second Quarter
    • MACU came out strong to start the second period, opening with a 15-3 run over capped off on a Jaci Calavan left corner three to set the score to 39-16 with 6:31 remaining.
    • The Tigers scored seven of the next nine to knock the MACU advantage to under 20 at 41-23 on Olivia Bell's three with 3:24 to go.
    • A left-wing three by Miller at the 2:47 mark jumpstarted a 10-4 streak for the Evangels to close out the half as Miller also wrapped up the half with an offensive board and put-back at the last second to send MACU into the break with a 51-27 advantage.
  • Third Quarter
    • After Central Christian's Hallee Winsea knocked down a three on the Tigers' first possession, the Evangels recaptured the momentum by going on an unanswered 22-point run wrapped up on Miller's left corner three at the 4:16 mark to bring it to 73-30.
    • A Brasia Garza pull-up jumper on the ensuing possession finally ended the CCCK's drought, the Evangels countered by scoring the next seven an Alexis Borgstadt's driving layup down the left lane made it an 80-32 with 2:15 left.
    • The Tigers closed out the quarter by scoring the final five points over the last minute to trim the MACU lead down to 80-37.
  • Fourth Quarter
    • Through the first five minutes of the final period, the Tigers scored 13 of the first 22 points to knock the MACU edge to under 40 at 89-50 on Kylee Jones' layup with 4:52 to go.
    • MACU's Kayla Highfill helped the Evangels fire off a 10-2 run with a jumper, a Mia Smith layup, and Miller's seventh three of the contest before finishing off a three-point play to set the score to 99-52 with 2:38 left.
    • Highfill closed out the game by knocking down a three from the top of the key with 30 seconds left to wrap-up the 104-55 final.
GAME NOTES
  • Recording its fifth 100-point game of the season, Mid-America Christian shot 37-for-75 (49.3 percent) while knocking down a season-high 16-of-37 (43.2 percent) from beyond the arc and also shot 14-for-18 (77.8 percent) from the charity stripe.
  • The Evangels defense held Central Christian to just 22-of-59 (37.3 percent) shooting, including 7-for-27 (25.9 percent) from three while also taking just six foul shots (4-for-6, 66.7 percent).
  • MACU also forced the Tigers into committing 23 turnovers while committing just 13 of its own to go with 23 assists.
  • The Evangels dominated the glass, outrebounding the Tigers by a 50-30 margin with a 19-8 edge on the offensive glass. Sydney Savage led MACU's rebounding efforts with 10 boards.
  • Mid-America Christian's bench came up big for the Evangels, outscoring the Tigers' reserves 58-13.
  • Leading six Evangels into double-digit scoring, graduate student forward Karley Miller scored a career-high 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 7-for-10 from three-point range to go with three boards. Those seven made threes not only set a season-high for MACU, but also broke into MACU's NAIA Era record for the fourth-most made threes in a single game. The last Evangel to make seven threes in a game was McKenzi Lamer against the Tigers on Feb. 13, 2021.
  • Alexis Borgstadt also poured in 15 points off the MACU bench on 5-of-8 shooting while Kylee Scheer added 14, Shy Christopher and Jaci Calavan tallied 13 apiece with Kayla Highfill rounding out MACU's double-figure scorers with 10 points on 4-of-7 from the field.
  • With the victory, the Evangels have now won 19 straight games against Central Christian since Nov. 28, 2006.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will complete its three-game in six-day stretch on Monday as the Evangels will head uptown to take on rival Southwestern Christian for a 6 p.m. tip-off inside Pickens-Springer Gymnasium.
