Baseball Stymies Southwestern 18-1 to Complete Sweep

WINFIELD, Kan.  – In a series full of runs, the MACU baseball team saved its best for last on Monday as the Evangels came away with the 18-1 victory over Southwestern at the Broadway Sports Complex.

PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its season-high 18 runs on a season-best 18 hits and committed just one error while Southwestern notched its lone run on three hits and committed a pair of errors.
  • MACU opened the game quickly with a three-run first as Anthony Hampton drew a walk to start things off before Marcus Burton drove a double to deep center to bring him home. After the Evangels loaded the bases later in the frame, Carlos Medina drove in Burton on an RBI groundout to short before Taiga Sakuma lined a sac fly to right to bring in D'Andre Gaines to make it a 3-0 game.
  • The Evangels added an insurance run in the top of the fourth when Hampton slapped a single through the left side to bring in Sakuma with two outs to extend the MACU lead to 4-0.
  • Southwestern got the run back in the bottom of the fourth when Tyler Seboldt slapped a hard-hopping chopper that got over the second baseman to bring in Zach Boone to close it to a three-run game.
  • MACU put together a massive four-run fifth by taking advantage of a pair of Moundbuilders miscues. After Gaines reached on an infield single, he came around to score on a misplayed grounder by the second baseman. He then scored on a double to right-center by Sakuma, Sakuma scored on a misplayed grounder on Caden Harris' single to left before Hampton finished the inning by ripping a double down the left field line to plate Harris, setting the score to 8-1.
  • The Evangels continued to pour it on in the top of the sixth with back-to-back solo homers by Gaines to left and Kyle Williams to right-center. MACU added two more later in the frame when Stark hit a chopper to third to plate Carlos Medina before Jacob Police laced a two-out triple over the left fielder's head to bring in Sakuma, setting the score to 12-1.
  • Mid-America Christian continued to pour on the runs in the top of the seventh as the Evangels brought home six in the inning. The Evangels got another two-run double out of Williams before he came around to score later in the inning on Joel Nieves' RBI fielder's choice. MACU ended the massive frame when Jason Thurman hammered a bases-clearing double down the left field line to wrap-up the 18-1 final.
  • After throwing six stellar innings, senior pitcher Devan Quesada picked up his first victorious pitching decision for the Evangels, allowing only one earned run on three hits with two walks and struck a season-high nine batters.
  • Overall, 10 different Evangels recorded RBIs in the contest as Kyle Williams led the way by going 3-for-4 with a double, a homer with three RBIs, three runs and a walk. Jason Thurman also tallied a trio of RBIs on his pinch-hit double in the seventh.
  • D'Andre Gaines was one of three MACU bats to record three or more hits, leading the Evangels by slashing 4-for-5 with a homer and an RBI to go with three runs scored.
  • Taiga Sakuma continued to stay hot from the plate as well, batting 3-for-3 with two doubles and scored a team-high four runs.
  • Overall, the Evangels downright dominated the three-game series, outscoring Southwestern 43-9.
  • With the victory, Mid-America Christian improved to 10-2 all-time against Southwestern while the Evangels are now on a six-game winning streak going into their home-opener.

  • Mid-America Christian will have a short turnaround for its home-opener as the Evangels will face a strong test from Friends on Tuesday. The opening pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at the MACU Baseball Field.
