Softball Slugs Way to Split at Texas Wesleyan

FORT WORTH, Texas – The MACU softball team got the power bats going in its series-opening doubleheader at Sycamore Park on Thursday as the Evangels split the twin-bill, winning game one 7-2 before falling in the second game 8-5 against Texas Wesleyan.

GAME ONE
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 7, Texas Wesleyan 2
    • Mid-America Christian (17-11, 10-7 SAC)
    • Texas Wesleyan (18-11, 11-6 SAC)
PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its seven runs on nine hits and committed one error while Texas Wesleyan pushed across its lone run on four hits and made four miscues.
  • Mid-America Christian generated an early run when Kisbel Vizcaya in the very first at-bat hit a scoring liner that deflected off the first baseman. After the second baseman made an errant throw over to try to get Vizcaya out, the MACU third baseman got down to second, moved over to third on a groundout before scoring when Brooklyn Wilson slapped a chopper to second for the RBI groundout.
  • Both teams would struggle to find baserunners until the bottom of the fourth when Brooklyn Wilson lined a triple to the right-center field wall before Morgan Fowble drove her in on an RBI grounder to the shortstop, setting the score to 2-0.
  • The Rams got both runs back in the bottom of the fourth when a one-out error led to Kylie Barnes smashing a game-tying two-run homer over the left field wall to make it a 2-2 game. Despite Abbie Bird reaching on a single up the middle in the very next at-bat, MACU starting pitcher Rachel Eggleston managed to limit the damage by inducing a 6-4-3 double play to get out of the inning.
  • The Evangels mustered a major threat in the top of the fifth when Talyn Wheeler slapped a one-out pinch-hit single to left and got down to second on a throwing error and to third on a sac bunt. However, MACU was unable to push the run across as Abbie Bird struck out Vizcaya to end the threat.
  • Despite coming up empty with a great chance in the fifth, the Evangels recaptured the advantage in the sixth as Fowble delivered a one-hit double to the left-center field gap to score Brooklyn Wilson from first to set the score to 3-2.
  • In the top of the seventh, MACU put across some big time insurance with a four-run frame, starting with a lead-off solo home run by Karlee Danielson. Later in the frame, Brooklyn Wilson hammered a two-RBI single to the right-center field gap before Fowble notched her third RBI of the contest on a groundball single through the left side to extend the edge to 7-2.
  • Overall, the Evangels got a ton of production from their heart of the order. The three and four-hole hitters in Brooklyn Wilson and Fowble combined to go 4-for-7 with a double, a triple and six RBIs.
  • Danielson notched her second career MACU homer, finishing the day 1-for-2 with a walk to go with her solo shot.
  • Eggleston put together a solid bounce-back start in the circle in getting the complete-game win, allowing just two runs, one earned on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

GAME NOTES
  • Texas Wesleyan scored its nine runs on 10 hits and committed a pair of errors while the Evangels scored their six runs on nine hits and made seven errors.
  • Once again, the Evangels got off to a quick start as Kisbel Vizcaya reaching on an error and a Brooklyn Wilson single and steal of second put two runners in scoring position. Karlee Danielson then delivered a deep flyball double off the base of the left field wall to bring both runners in to make it a 2-0 ballgame.
  • The Evangels ran into a disaster in the bottom of the third as Texas Wesleyan scored seven runs on six hits while MACU committed three errors in the frame as TWU grabbed ahold of a 7-2 advantage.
  • Mid-America Christian got a solid chunk of the deficit knocked down in the top of the fourth with a three-run frame. After Danielson and Emylee Campbell reached on back-to-back singles, Madison Mora cranked her first career MACU home run over the left field wall as the three-RBI blast closed the gap to 7-5.
  • Texas Wesleyan put together a major threat in the bottom of the fourth by loading the bases with no outs. However, MACU's call to the pen paid off as Avery Schneringer was able to induce a pop out and a strikeout before Hallie Wilson made a sensational diving catch on a liner to left for the third out to keep the Rams off the board.
  • Unfortunately for the Evangels, the Rams got two of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth when a Kaylee Ramirez RBI groundout allowed two runs to score on an errant back throw by the first baseman to get the runner at third, stretching the TWU advantage to 9-5.
  • MACU threatened to get both runs back in its half of the sixth when Danielson was hit by a pitch in the opening at-bat and Mora hammered a one-out double to the right-center field wall to put runners at second and third. MACU did get one with a runner scoring on a passed ball, but the Rams made a strong defensive play to get Mora out trying to score on a ground ball to second, keeping it to a 9-6 game, but the Evangels would be unable to add any more in the seventh to fall in the nightcap.
  • Mora put together her best day from the plate in her two-year MACU career as the sophomore second baseman slashed 2-for-3 while slugging a double and a homer for three RBIs and a run. Danielson also put up a strong day from the dish, going 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs with a pair of runs scored.
  • Brooklyn Wilson continued to stay hot with the bat, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored to go with a stolen base. Wilson continues to climb up MACU's NAIA Era (2008-present) career record book as her 29th career two-bagger moves her into a tie with Alanna Leisy (2018-19) and Kassie Martin (2020-22) for the fifth-most in the book.
  • It was a tough outing for Chana Wolfe in the circle as she suffered the loss. After throwing two consecutive hit-less innings, Wolfe ultimately suffered the loss after going 2.1 innings and allowing six runs, five earned on five hits with two walks.
  • Coming off her NAIA Pitcher of the Week performance, Avery Schneringer tossed three quality innings out of MACU's pen, allowing just two runs, one earned on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.
  • It was a tough day for MACU's defense as the Evangels were credited with a season-high seven errors. Coming into the contest, Mid-America Christian had only committed more than two errors in one of its previous 13 contests.
UP NEXT
  • The Evangels will wrap-up the four-game series against the Rams on Friday as the series finale doubleheader is slated for an 11 a.m. start at Sycamore Park.
