No. 22 Baseball Pacifies Pioneers’ Bats Behind Quesada, Robeaux Gems

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU baseball team's incredible success during the 2024 season was on full display in its doubleheader matchup against Wayland Baptist at the MACU Baseball Field on Friday afternoon as Devan Quesada and Zane Robeaux tossed two stellar starts in a 4-0, 6-1 doubleheader sweep over the Pioneers.

GAME ONE

    • Mid-America Christian (22-8, 11-2 SAC)
    • Wayland Baptist (17-15, 7-3 SAC)
PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its four runs on five hits while Wayland Baptist tallied only one hit and committed four errors.
  • On a windy day that would prevent both teams from executing the power game, the Evangels utilized its opportunities in the bottom of the first when D'Andre Gaines laced a sharp line drive single to center before stealing second. The robbery set up MACU's top-hitter Noel McGarry-Doyle with an RBI single up the middle for the first run of the game. After an errant throw on a fielder's choice put runners at the corners, Anthony Hampton brought in the second run of the game with a slow chopper between the shortstop and third baseman, legging out the infield single while plating McGarry-Doyle to set the score to 2-0.
  • In the top of the third, MACU starting pitcher Devan Quesada caught a bit of a tough break when the Pioneers recorded their only hit on a flyball double that just barely dropped in-between Gaines and Joel Nieves in the shallow left-center field gap, resulting in a two-out double for Jan Rollon.
  • The Evangels managed to add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth without recording a single hit. After Zachary Stark led off the frame with a walk, an error on Taiga Sakuma's sacrifice bunt put runners at the corners before Gaines drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Even though Wayland Baptist managed to induce a 5-2 fielder's choice out on McGarry-Doyle, Kyle Williams managed to bring in Sakuma with an RBI fielder's choice to second to make it a 3-0 game.
  • After being held hitless for four consecutive innings, MACU was finally able to snap the cold spell when Carlos Medina smacked a leadoff single through the left side before his pinch-runner Marcus Burton made a huge heads-up play by stealing second before Guillermo Velasco's pinch-hitting appearance. After Velasco grounded out to first to move the runner to third, Stark added one last run of insurance with an RBI single up the middle to wrap-up the 4-0 final.
  • Despite just barely missing out on the no-hitter, Quesada picked up the first complete-game shutout for the Evangels in 2024 after throwing seven innings and allowing one hit and three walks to go with seven strikeouts.
  • Even though MACU was held to its third-lowest hit total of the season with five knocks, the Evangels were productive in scoring their four runs as five different players recorded a hit. McGarry-Doyle led the Evangels bats by slashing 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Stark reached base safely three times on a 1-for-1 day from the dish with two walks.
GAME TWO
SCORE
  • Mid-America Christian 6, Wayland Baptist 1
    • Mid-America Christian (23-8, 12-2 SAC)
    • Wayland Baptist (17-16, 7-4 SAC)
PITCHING DECISIONS TOP PERFORMERS SCORING SUMMARY GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its six runs on seven hits and committed one error while Wayland Baptist scored its only run on three hits and made five miscues.
  • The Evangels immediately started generating some offense in the bottom of the first as a Taiga Sakuma leadoff single and a Noel McGarry-Doyle base-on-balls set up Kyle Williams to drop an RBI single into the right-center field gap for the first run while setting MACU up with runners at the corners. Anthony Hampton then dropped an RBI single down the left field line before Carlos Medina made it a 3-0 game with a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Williams.
  • MACU continuously added insurance runs over the next three frames. After Joel Nieves executed a perfect leadoff drag bunt single in-between the pitcher and second baseman, he nabbed second on a stolen base and advanced to third on the errant throw to second before Zachary Stark chopped a grounder to second that plated Nieves, setting the score to 4-0.
  • In the bottom of the third, back-to-back singles by McGarry-Doyle and Williams put runners at the corners with no outs before Hampton notched his second RBI on a sacrifice fly to right to bring in McGarry-Doyle to make it 5-0.
  • Jacob Police scored MACU's final run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth. After being pegged by a pitch in the first at-bat, he was moved over to second on a sac bunt before coming across to score on a passed ball and a wild pitch during Stark's at-bat to make it a 6-0 game.
  • The Pioneers only run of the day came in some unconventional means in the top of the fifth when Hayden Ingram struck out, but reached first on a dropped third strike before a sac bunt and a groundout moved him to third. Felix Polanco then plated Ingram when his sharp grounder was misplayed at third, ultimately wrapping up the scoring at 6-1.
  • Zane Robeaux continued his incredible hot streak on the mound for MACU in the win as the senior righty tossed six innings and allowed just one unearned run on three hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. On-top of earning his 16th career win, the Mustang, Oklahoma native continued to climb up MACU's NAIA Era (2008-present) career record book by notching his 169th strikeout. With his teammate Cameron Brown notching his 169th punchout in the seventh inning, the tandem moved into a tie for fourth on the career list with each now sitting just five shy of tying Keisy Portorreal for third.
  • Just a year-and-a-half into his MACU career, McGarry-Doyle also made his way into the top 10 list for career hits as his 107th knock moved him into a tie for 10th with Colt Pickens (2016-17) and former teammate Andrew Enwiya (2022-23). By also scoring his 98th career run, he also moved into a tie for second in MACU's book for career runs with Felix Martinez (2018-20).
  • With the victory, the Evangels have won their first five Sooner Athletic Conference series and with Oklahoma City suffering a 3-1 loss at Southwestern Assemblies of God, MACU currently owns a three-game lead over the Stars for the top spot in the SAC standings.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will wrap-up the series on Saturday with the finale slated for a noon first pitch.
