GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian scored its 10 runs on 10 hits and committed two errors while the Lions scored their six runs on seven hits.
  • The Evangels were able to get the scoring going early against SAGU ace Ethan Nors in the bottom of the first. After Taiga Sakuma drew a lead-off walk after a lengthy at-bat, D'Andre Gaines on the very first pitch smashed a deep fly ball down the left field line for the two-run homer to give MACU the lead. Following Noel McGarry-Doyle reaching on a walk and Kyle Williams reaching on an infield single, Carlos Medina brought home McGarry-Doyle with a deep double to the right-center field wall before Jacob Police plated Williams with a sac fly to left to make it a 4-0 game after one.
  • The Lions cut MACU's lead in-half in the top of the third when a costly throwing error at third allowed the lead-off man Dominick Padilla to reach before Josh Pinter made a 4-2 game when he launched a two-run homer that just barely stayed fair down the right field line.
  • SAGU made their move into the lead in the top of the fourth as a lead-off Wesley Flatt homer to right-center cut it to 4-3. After loading the bases with just one out, an Eli Lyons groundout to third allowed the tying run to score before a Pinter two-RBI single to right gave the Lions the 6-4 advantage.
  • After getting runners to second and third with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, it was looking like MACU may come up empty as an Anthony Hampton lineout to short and a Medina groundout to third kept the runners in-place. However, Police came up with a two-out single through the left side to bring in McGarry-Doyle. MACU did try to score a second run on the batted ball, but Williams was called out at home for going through the catcher, keeping to a 6-5 game.
  • The Lions did put together a major threat in the top of the fifth as a throwing error and a pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs, but reliever Breyllin Suriel was able to settle down and get pinch-hitter Corinthian Jones to flyout to right to keep it to a one-run deficit.
  • After being quieted with three-up-three-down innings in the fourth and fifth, the Evangels got back on-track in the bottom of the sixth with a huge five-run frame. After leading off the sixth with back-to-back singles by Hampton and Medina, Police moved both runners into scoring position with a sac bunt before pinch-hitter Guillermo Velasco delivered the game-tying RBI single to right.
  • Following Joel Nieves re-entered and stole second to put two in scoring position again, Zachary Stark hit a clutch full-count, two-RBI single to center put the Evangels in-front for good at 8-6. MACU added two more key insurance runs later in the sixth after loading the bases as Jordan Crawford punched a two-RBI single through the left side to ultimately wrap-up the 10-6 comeback win.
  • The hitting was relatively spread out for the MACU bats as nine different Evangels recorded their 10 hits as Medina was the lone player with a multi-hit game after going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
  • Crawford, Gaines, Police and Stark each finished with two RBIs apiece while Sakuma and Noel McGarry-Doyle led the base-running efforts with each scoring a pair of runs.
  • Coming in relief during the fourth inning, Suriel earned his third-straight win in three consecutive appearances after going 2.2 innings and allowing only one hit and two walks while striking out a pair.
  • With his run scored in the bottom of the first, McGarry-Doyle became just the second Evangels player since joining the NAIA in 2008 to score 100 career runs as he currently only sits behind former teammate Yan Ely Adames (120, 2019-23) for the team's record. McGarry-Doyle also tied Adames in another statistical category as his hit-by-pitch marked the 25th of his career, tying him for second in the book.

GAME NOTES
  • The Evangels scored their three runs on six hits while SAGU tallied its one run on five hits with three errors.
  • Mid-America Christian had the first great scoring chance when Taiga Sakuma led off the bottom of the first with a line drive single that went off the pitcher, getting down to second on a throwing error by the pitcher trying to get the out at first before trotting down to third on a groundout to short. However, MACU was unable to get their designated hitter home as a strikeout and a groundout to short ended the threat.
  • In a game with limited scoring opportunities, Southwestern Assemblies of God scored their lone run by utilizing some small ball as Wesley Flatt came around after leading off the frame with a single to left, stole second, went down to third on a groundout to third before Xavien Thompson's sacrifice fly to right brought in Flatt for the 1-0 score.
  • It didn't take long for not only the Evangels to get the tying score, but score the winning run in the bottom of the third. After Zachary Stark reached on a throwing error to start off the inning, his courtesy runner K.J. Moo-Young came across for the tying score when Sakuma slipped a ground ball single just through the right side.
  • Following Sakuma nabbing second on a stolen base, D'Andre Gaines fisted a single off the handle through the right side to plate Sakuma to give MACU the 2-1 advantage. Two batters later, Carlos Medina capped off the scoring by slapping a single up the middle to plate Gaines to set the score to 3-1.
  • The Lions were never able to muster much of a threat against MACU starting pitcher Zane Robeaux as the senior hurler ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts to wrap-up the 3-1 final.
  • Robeaux, the SAC's ERA leader continued to stay red-hot on the mound as the Mustang, Oklahoma native notched his third-consecutive quality start and his fifth-straight win in as many appearances. Overall, Robeaux went the distance, allowing just one earned run on five hits with no walks to go with six strikeouts. By improving to 6-0 on the season, Robeaux moved into a tie with Thomas Peabody (2010) and Madison Spencer (2017) for the eighth-most wins in a single season in the NAIA Era.
  • Robeaux also continued his charge up several career MACU record lists with his outing. On-top of taking back the wins record with his 17th, he also surpassed Keisy Portorreal (174, 2018-20) for third in the NAIA Era strikeouts book with his 175th in the final out while also moving into fourth in the innings pitched chart with 154 completed frames in his career.
  • The top of MACU's order in Sakuma and Gaines led the batting efforts with four of the Evangels' six hits, as Gaines slashed 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored while Sakuma finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run and a stolen base.
  • By getting the win, the Evangels have won six-straight Sooner Athletic Conference series while the 15th league victory tied last year's program record mark after MACU went 15-9 in 2023.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will aim for its fourth-straight SAC series sweep on Saturday as the Evangels will wrap-up the slate with a noon first pitch.
