Men’s Basketball Set to Battle SAC Leader Wayland Baptist on Saturday

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU Men's Basketball team will be seeking to shake things up at the top of the Sooner Athletic Conference table on Saturday afternoon as the Evangels wrap-up the first half of league play against current leader Wayland Baptist for a 4 p.m. tip-off inside the Gaulke Activity Center.

Mid-America Christian will also be welcoming in the Teams of Tomorrow to perform at halftime of both men's and women's games.

SEASON REPORT
  • Record: 10-5 (6-5 SAC)
  • Last Game: Lost vs. Oklahoma Panhandle State – 85-84 – Jan. 9, 2025 – Gaulke Activity Center
  • Stat Leaders:
  • Team Notes:
    • Mid-America Christian had a heartbreaking result in its return home on Thursday as Oklahoma Panhandle State rallied to defeat MACU 85-84 on a steal and fastbreak layup with 2.4 seconds left. The result not only gave the Evangels their first home loss, but their first back-to-back defeats of the season.
    • It was a tough result for MACU who put together a phenomenal offensive game as the Evangels posted their second-highest shooting percentage (52.8, 28-of-53) and highest free throw percentage (82.1, 23-for-28). However, it was also MACU's worst defensive game of the season as the Evangels allowed a season-high 85 points while the Aggies shot a very strong 49.1 percent (27-of-55), including going 46.4 percent (13-for-28) from three-point range.
    • After struggling from the field over the last four games, shooting below his season average, senior forward Keeshawn Mason broke out of the slump in a big way by scoring a MACU career-high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting while going 3-for-4 from the foul line.
    • As the Evangels are closing out the first half of SAC play, senior guard Josiah Fulcher holds the distinction of being one of only three players in the conference that ranks in the top 10 in all three shooting categories as he is knocking down 53.3 percent (7th) from the field, 42.2 percent (6th) from three and 85.4 percent (6th) from the free throw line. Wayland Baptist's Quenton Coleman and College of the Ozarks' Garrett Snyder are the only other two players that also rank in the top 10 in all three shooting phases.
SCOUTING REPORT
Wayland Baptist (Texas)
  • Record: 10-6 (10-2 SAC)
  • Last Game: Lost at Oklahoma Panhandle State – 67-66 – Jan. 6, 2025 – Goodwell, Okla.
  • Series vs MACU (2007-): WBU leads 21-13
  • Last Game vs MACU: MACU won 84-82 – Jan. 25, 2024 – Plainview, Texas
  • Series Streak: MACU won 2
  • Players to Watch:
    • Quenton Coleman – SR – G
      • 345 Points (21.6 ppg), 113-233 FG (48.5%), 54-119 3FG (45.4%), 65-73 FT (89.0%), 52 Reb (3.3 rpg), 40 Assists (2.5 apg), 25 Steals (1.6 spg)
    • Dylan McDougal – SR – G
      • 138 Points (8.6 ppg), 53-130 FG (40.8%), 15-53 3FG (28.3%), 61 Reb (3.8 rpg)
    • Kabine Kaba – JR – F
      • 112 Points (7.5 ppg), 37-73 FG (50.7%), 32-45 FT (71.1%), 98 Reb (6.5 rpg), 16 Blocks (1.1 bpg)
  • Team Notes:
    • Much like the Evangels, Wayland Baptist is also coming off a disappointing result to Oklahoma Panhandle State as the Aggies handed the Pioneers just their second conference loss in a 67-66 result inside Anchor D Arena on Monday, dropping WBU to just a game ahead of Langston (8-2) for the top spot in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings.
    • Since starting SAC play, Wayland Baptist enters as the second-best scoring team in the conference at 75.2 ppg while posting the second-highest shooting percentage (46.6 percent) and three-point percentage (36.8) with John Brown being the only team in the conference that's averaging more points and a higher shooting percentage in each category.
    • Unlike the Evangels with four players averaging in double-figures, MACU will need to key on the league's scoring leader and reigning NAIA Offensive Player of the Week in senior guard Quenton Coleman. The second-year player for the Pioneers holds more than a point lead in the league's scoring average (21.6 ppg) while also ranking 10th in field goal percentage (48.5), fourth in three-point percentage (45.4) and third in free throw percentage (89.0).
    • Even though Wayland Baptist holds the all-time lead in the series, Mid-America Christian pulled out a pair of close victories against WBU last season to complete the sweep. In their last meeting inside the Gaulke on Jan. 25, 2024, the Pioneers rallied back from a 19-point deficit with 6:32 remaining in the second half to close it to a one-possession game. The Pioneers had a chance at the end with the ball in Coleman's hands, but his three-point buzzer beater bricked off the back iron as MACU held on for the 84-82 victory.
