No. 18 Women’s Basketball Sees Scheer Steal Show in Series Sweep over Southwestern Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 18 MACU Women's basketball team came through with the regular season series sweep over SAC rival Southwestern Christian in a runaway 84-65 victory. Kylee Scheer turned in an all-time performance as she set her career-high with 32 points on 12-of-19 from the floor with a game high nine boards and five assists as well.

TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • First Quarter
    • Mid-America Christian (17-3, 13-3 SAC) jumped out the gates with an 8-0 run after the first two minutes with Mary Nyakundi starting it off with an easy lay-in followed by back-to-back triples by Kylee Scheer and Talayah Thomas.
    • After a 4-of-5 start, the Evangels went cold from the field going 1-for-8 midway through the quarter allowing Southwestern Christian (7-13, 6-11 SAC) to go on a 7-0 run capped off on a three-ball by Chrissen Harland to make it a two-point game with the Evangels leading 14-12 with 1:50 to play.
    • MACU closed out the quarter with five unanswered off a three from straightaway by Hailey Tunnell followed by a Nyakundi putback with the shot clock winding down with just :50 seconds left to conclude scoring in the quarter, giving MACU a 19-12 advantage.
  • Second Quarter
    • Tunnell led off the second frame with another trey this time from the right corner providing the Evangels with a double-digit lead up 22-12.  
    • Delaney Reimer knocked down a pair from the line for SCU, however MACU struck for seven straight with all seven points being accredited to Kylee Scheer bumping the MACU lead up to 29-14 with 5:50 to play.
    • The Eagles came through for a slight 12-7 edge over the next 2:43 cutting the lead back to ten down 34-24, however a 12-2 surge by MACU finished off the half with Scheer red-hot, she connected for back-to-back three's followed by a floater as time expired finishing off an 8-0 run. Scheer posted 15 points overall in the quarter that let the Evangels carry a 46-26 lead into the halftime break.
  • Third Quarter
    • MACU scored 7 of the first 11 points of the half with Nyakundi putting up five points on a pair of layups with one plus the foul. Both teams proceeded to go bucket-for-bucket for the next two minutes with both teams putting up nine points apiece through the first 4:23.
    • Scheer gave MACU the upper hand in the quarter on a splash from behind the arc on Sydney Savage's feed boosting the Evangels lead to 58-35 with 4:50 remaining.
    • MACU continued with the foot on the gas pedal scoring seven points in just under a minute capped off on Shy Christopher's layup after Aniya Smith came up with a steal allowing Tunnell to dime Christopher on the fast break score. The final 2:21 of the quarter was in favor of the Eagles as they scored nine of 12 cutting MACU's lead to 68-46 entering the last frame.
  • Fourth Quarter
    • The Evangels connected for 10 of the first 15 points including Scheers 30th point of the night tying her career-high on a turnaround jumper. Nyakundi also chipped in contributing with two threes both from the left elbow giving MACU a 78-51 lead with 6:36 to go.
    • SCU was able to outscore MACU 14-6 the rest of the way against the MACU reserves, however it was far too late for a comeback with the Evangels running away with an 84-65 victory.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian shot a productive 30-of-66 (45.5 percent) from the floor as well as tying a season-high of three-pointers with 12. MACU held the Southwestern Christian to 65 points including just 26 in the first half, the Eagles overall went 23-of-57 (40.4 percent.)
  • MACU had a plus-12 margin on boards with a 42-30 advantage, that helped contribute to 13-0 in the second chance points column as well as a 36-28 edge on points inside the paint.
  • Kylee Scheer had one of the best performances of her MACU career as she cashed in for a career-high of 32 points on 12-of-19 from the field. Impressively enough, Scheer started the contest 2-of-6 and proceeded to go 10-of-13 after the first quarter. On top of a career high in points, she tied her season high in three's (five) which fell just one short of her career high of six. Scheer tacked on nine boards and five assists which were both game highs among both teams.
  • Mary Nyakundi had a solid day from the floor finishing with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting including 2-of-5 from three.
  • Hailey Tunnell continued to be a spark coming off the bench as she added nine points on 3-of-8 shooting all behind the three-point line.
  • Facilitator of the offensive Talayah Thomas had a solid performance as she had seven points on 3-of-7 from the field, with six boards, five assists and a block.
  • Although Shy Christopher did not need to shoot much for the Evangels to win, today marked the third time in four games she has scored 10 or less points. She accomplished that feat just one time prior in the year where she scored 10 points in the 76-66 win over Cottey on Nov. 8.
  • Mid-America Christian has now won three consecutive games against SCU with an NAIA-era record of 31-9 dating back to 2003.

  • MACU will remain at home with a 2 p.m. matchup at home inside the Gaulke Activity Center as they will be seeking another regular season series sweep taking on the Oklahoma City Stars.
