Women’s Basketball Soars Past Eagles 62-57 in SAC Opener

BETHANY, OKLA. – MACU Women's Basketball wins its Sooner Athletic Conference opener on the road 62-57 against crosstown rival Southwestern Christian on Thursday evening.

TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • First Quarter
    • SCU opened with a pair of three-pointers from Brooke Robertson sandwiched around a triple from Caitlynn Jordan on the Evangels opening possession. The Eagles quickly jumped on a 7-0 run to lead 13-5 with four minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
    • Jordan kept the Evangels with a second triple, to record her eight of MACU's 10 first quarter points, as the Eagles led the Evangels 17-10 after one.
  • Second Quarter
    • The Evangels found offense to start the second through Monique Carter 90 seconds in drilling the corner three. However, quick offense from SCU regained a nine-point lead at 24-15 after a Chrissen Harland triple with 7:27 left.  
    • MACU turned up the defense to force two steals and tough shots which the Evangels turned into easy offense on the other end. The Evangels responded with an 11-0 run in three minutes to take their first lead at 26-24. Jordan was the first Evangel to double-digit scoring with a jumper to start the run. Sincere Roberts scored consecutive buckets, and Carter continued her aggression offensively to flip the momentum with four minutes remaining.
    • Taliah Lee cashed a three to give MACU its largest lead of the game at 31-26. However, the Eagles fended off the quick momentum and fought to close the half to earn their points from the free throw line. The Evangels scored the final bucket of the first half as Lee got the rim and MACU took a 35-32 lead to halftime.
  • Third Quarter
    • MACU continued to crank up the defense to force four turnovers in the opening four minutes of the quarter as the Evangels found offense through Mia Smith who cashed in for her first points to extend the MACU advantage to 42-32 with 6:00 left.
    • Roberts reached double digits with a mid-range jumper, right after splashing a triple on the possession prior. The Evangels led 51-37 going into the third quarter media timeout with 3:37 left.
    • The Eagles closed the gap before heading into the final quarter, but the Evangels led 53-41.
  • Fourth Quarter
    • SCU took full advantage of a sluggish start to the quarter for MACU as the Eagles continued their extended run from the end of the third to cut the Evangel lead back to single digits at 54-46, three and a half minutes in.
    • Carter broke the scoring drought for MACU with another three-pointer to take her game total to 11 points. The Evangels three-point shooting continued to maintain their advantage as this time it was Mia Smith cashing in from behind the arc to return the lead to double-digits at 60-50 with 3:30 remaining.
    • A triple from Harland brought the Eagles to within five at 60-55 with 90 seconds to play and gave her a team-high 16 points. However, the Evangels fended off the late Eagles' push to win their SAC opener 62-57.
GAME NOTES
  • MACU finished 25-58 (43.1%) from the field, 8-23 (34.8%) from three, but struggled from the free throw line at 50% from the free throw line converting on 4 of 8. SCU shot 17-45 (37.8%) from the field, 30% from behind the arc at 6-20, and 17-21 (81%) from the charity stripe.  
  • MACU won the turnover battle at 17-19, but both teams were equal on points off turnovers with 18 apiece. The Eagles won the boards battle by a small 33-32 margin, but the Evangels grabbed more offensive rebounds at 9-6.
  • Caitlynn Jordan led the Evangels offensively with 18 points shooting 8-17 from the field, converting two of her five three pointers. Three other Evangels finished in double-digit scoring; Sincere Roberts added 13 points off 6-13, Monique Carter contributed 11 with 4-7 from the field and a pair of triples, and Mia Smith had 10 from an efficient 4-6 and 2-3 from behind the arc.
  • Jordan finished with nine rebounds, four offensive, to go along with her 18 points, as she was one board away from a double-double for the second consecutive game. Roberts grabbed eight rebounds of her own with two offensive.
  • Taliah Lee, Allie Harris, and Carter all finished with a team-high three assists.
  • MACU improves to 35-9 all-time against SCU, to extend to four consecutive wins over the Eagles.
