Women’s Soccer Suffers 4-0 Defeat to Oklahoma Wesleyan in NAIA Tournament Second Round

TULSA, OKLA. – MACU Women's Soccer saw its season come to end on Saturday evening in Tulsa, Okla. in the NAIA Tournament Second Round in a 4-0 loss to No. 5 Oklahoma Wesleyan.

MATCH SUMMARY
  • First Half
    • Mid-America Christian jumped on the OKWU defense early as Caitlin Hirst fired a shot that struck off the cross bar three minutes into the game. Hirst forced the first save of the afternoon from the Eagles goalkeeper, Alessandra Martinez, in the 25th minute to deny the opener.
    • Ariana Solorio was called up in the 33rd minute for her first save of the game to reject the Eagles' leading goalscorer, Laura Gieseler.
    • However, OKWU found the breakthrough after great spells of possession opened the opportunity for Gieseler to slip one past Solorio for the opener right before halftime in the 40th minute.
    • Maria Scopino opened space to get her shot off in the 44th minute but was once again equaled to by Martinez to stop the equalizer before the halftime break.
  • Second Half
    • OKWU added its second just four minutes into the half through Ana Chavez who received a good ball from Tessa Edwards on the assist. The Evangels were on their heels defensively again as Gieseler fired another one on frame a minute later, but Solorio denied it.
    • In the 78th minute, Kristen Bruhns scored her first goal of the season to make it three for the Eagles and shut down any potential comeback that the Evangels were pushing for.
    • Stephanie Arrivillaga got a shot off in the 83 minute to test Martinez's goal, but she preserved her clean sheet headed into the final five minutes.
    • Frederiekke Nielsen added an extra goal in the 88th minute to make it four and advance to the Round of 16.
MATCH NOTES
  • OKWU finished with 11 total shots with eight of them finding the target. While MACU managed six shots, finding the frame with three of them.
  • Caitlin Hirst led the Evangel attack with three total shots, one striking the crossbar, and the other on target for the save.
  • Ariana Solorio made four saves in an incredible debut season at goalkeeper for the Evangels.  
  • Mid-America Christian falls to 2-4 all-time against Oklahoma Wesleyan now, in the first meeting since 2021 between the Evangels and Eagles.
  • With this defeat, MACU's season comes to end finishing with a 12-5-3 record, and a 5-1-3 Sooner Athletic Conference record.
