Men's Basketball Defeats USAO Behind White's Last Second Lay

CHICKASHA, OKLA. – The MACU Men's basketball team won a thriller inside the USAO Fieldhouse; after trailing for the first time all game with 12 seconds remaining, Juwan White drilled a lay-up with three seconds left to provide the Evangels with a 75-74 victory.

GAME SUMMARY
  • First Half
    • Mid-America Christian jumped out to an early lead with Marque Wilkerson opening up the run by deflecting a pass by Manny Gatkek creating an easy fast break lay-in. Tarrence Gaines put up the next five including a three-ball from the corner to boost the MACU lead to 7-0 through the first minute and a half.
    • The next six minutes carried a 10-7 MACU advantage allowing them to take the first double-digit lead of the contest on a finger-roll by Josiah Fulcher making it 17-7 with 12:01 remaining.
    • Ryein Kennedy brought Science & Arts back in it by scoring back-to-back lay-ups with the foul for a 6-0 surge to cut the Evangels lead to 19-13.
    • The teams went back and forth for the next 3:20 with five points each, Magok Manyang extended the MACU lead to 27-18 on a three from the top of the key on Juwan White's assist.
    • The Drovers outscored the Evangels 12-10 over the final 6:20 with MACU wrapping up the half on a turnaround lay-up by Keeshawn Mason providing a 37-30 lead heading into the halftime break.
  • Second Half
    • It continued to be a blow-for-blow game with the Drovers scoring 14 of 25 to bring it back to a two-possession game down 48-44 through the first 4:45.
    • With 14:56 to go, MACU struck for a 9-1 surge over the next 3:48 with Gaines drilling a triple from the left wing on White's handoff to bring the Evangels lead back up to 57-45.
    • USAO strung together some tight-knitted defense to hold MACU without a field goal for four minutes while putting up nine of their own making it 59-54 in favor of the Evangels with 7:39 left.
    • The Drovers then outscored the Evangels 13-10 to bring it back to a close game with a 69-67 advantage in favor of MACU with 2:54 to go.
    • Quentin Woodson connected for his sixteenth point of the night to get the Evangels back in the scoring column up 71-67 with 2:32 to play, however the Drovers scored five of the next seven capturing their first and only lead of the day after a three-point shot was missed by Gaines that fell into the hands of Cade Allen who relayed it up court to Tyler Cauley who laid it in with 12 seconds to go putting USAO up 74-73.
    • With no timeouts remaining, MACU White flew coast-to-coast and drilled a teardrop with three seconds on the clock to retake the lead up 75-74. Cauley attempted a last second jumper but was unable to sink it, giving the Evangels a 75-74 victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Both teams finished dead even in the shooting column, with Mid-America Christian going 28-for-66 (42.4 percent) and Science & Arts shooting 25-for-59 (42.4 percent).
  • MACU was led by the duo of Tarrence Gaines and Quentin Woodson. Gaines led the Evangels in scoring with 20, falling just a point shy of his season high.
  • It was a career-night for Woodson, he put up a career-high 16 points with 10 rebounds, nabbing his first career double-double. He also led the contest in steals with three.
  • Juwan White and Josiah Fulcher were the other Evangels to reach double-figures in scoring, White finished with 10 points, three boards, two steals and a game-high four assists. White's biggest shot of the night was no doubt his game-winning lay-up with just three seconds on the clock propelling the Evangels to victory.
  • Magok Manyang contributed outside of scoring, he finished with six points, but he logged eight rebounds while matching his season-high in rejections with three.
  • The Evangels pulled away with 10 steals while surrendering just four to the Drovers.
  • MACU comes away with the regular season sweep over USAO with the victory tonight.
