No. 23 Women's Basketball Caps off Regular Season With Big Win Over Panhandle State

GOODWELL, Okla. – No. 23 MACU Women's basketball team wrapped up regular season play cruising to an 83-35 victory inside the Anchor D Arena against Panhandle State Saturday afternoon.
TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • First Quarter
    • Just over a minute into the contest Syncere Harrod got the opening bucket on a layup to kick off a 10-2 start for Mid-America Christian (23-5, 19-5 SAC) through the first 4:49.
    • Both teams went an even 10-10 in the scoring column over the final six minutes with Aniya Smith closing out the quarter on a layup with seven seconds remaining to extend the Evangels lead to 22-12.
  • Second Quarter
    • Mia Smith provided a 4-1 advantage through the first three minutes on a layup making it 26-13 with 7:00 minutes remaining.
    • A pair of free throws from Alexis Borgstadt jumpstarted a 12-0 MACU run that was capped off on a three-ball from Hailey Tunnell on Kylee Scheer's assist, the 12-0 run included three MACU steals in part of the seven Aggie turnovers committed in the quarter.
    • Mary Nyakundi connected twice from the charity stripe to conclude scoring in the half and finishing off a 20-5 run in the second, providing a 42-17 lead entering the break.
  • Third Quarter
    • The Evangels carried the momentum onto the second half, scoring the first 16 points off three steals while going 6-for-7 from the floor with Talayah Thomas wrapping off the surge with a three, making it 58-17 with 5:36 to go.
    • OPSU scored seven to MACU's six over the final 5:36 with Tessa Kile drilling a three to conclude scoring in the quarter with the Evangels leading 64-24.
  • Fourth Quarter
    • The teams went bucket-for-bucket with Panhandle having a slight 8-7 advantage until Aniya Smith made two from the free throw line to win the quarter back and bring the lead back to forty-plus points leading 73-32 with 4:17 to play.
    • MACU scored 10 of the next 13 including seven consecutive Evangel points on a pair of threes from Tunnell with a free throw mixed in as well. Borgstadt closed scoring off with two from the line allowing MACU to cruise to an 83-35 victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian outshot Panhandle 29-for-58 (50.0 percent) to 15-for-46, (32.6 percent) MACU dominated inside the paint with a 40-10 advantage on points inside the rack, with a plus-13 in rebounds at 35-23.
  • The Evangels did a great job forcing havoc for the Aggies offense, forcing 26 turnovers leading to 15 steals, which fell two-short of a season-high of 17 that occurred against Kansas Christian in the 108-38 win on Nov. 6.
  • Syncere Harrod led the contest in scoring with 19, she finished 8-of-11 from the field.
  • For the fifth time this season, Hailey Tunnell connected on at least four three-pointers. She finished second in the game in scoring with 15, going 5-of-10 from the floor with 4-of-8 behind the arc.
  • Kylee Scheer picked up 12 points behind 5-for-9 shooting, she added on three steals, eight boards which just missed a double-double and had a game high of five assists.
  • Mary Nyakundi was the only other Evangel to crack double-figures in the scoring column, she added 10 points with the majority of the damage coming from the free throw line with a 6-for-7 finish.
  • Talayah Thomas and Sydney Savage both offered efficient games, Thomas pieced together six points with four rebounds and four assists. Savage offered a great defensive effort tying Scheer and Shy Christopher with a game high of three steals.
  • Mid-America Christian picks up the thirteenth straight win over OPSU dating back to 2018.

  • Mid-America Christian now preps for the SAC tournament as the third seed against USAO in the quarterfinal with a tip-off set for 6:00 p.m. inside the Gaulke Activity Center.
