Softball Bested by British Columbia 6-2 in SCS NAIA Invitational Finale

MESQUITE, Texas – The MACU Softball team found itself down by five runs early and were unable to battle back as the Evangels fell 6-2 to British Columbia in its Southern Collegiate Sports NAIA Invitational finale at the Mesquite Girls Softball Complex on Saturday.

GAME SUMMARY
  • Mid-America Christian found itself in a tough spot early on as the first four UBC batters reached. After Keona Nordquist and Marin Jorgenson got on via a walk and a single to center, Shae Sever smacked a double down the left field line to bring the first run across before Kaitlyn Kim dropped a single into right to plate Jorgenson, setting the score to 2-0.
  • The Thunderbirds added to their advantage in the bottom of the second when Casey Lo singled to left before a single and a misplayed ball in left on Kaitlyn Eng's liner to left allowed both runners to score, setting the score to 4-0.
  • After going down in order through the first two innings, the Evangels broke through in the top of the third. After Emylee Campbell slapped a single up the middle and was eventually moved down to second on Stormy Haynes sac bunt, Kisbel Vizcaya delived an RBI single through the hole at short, bring in Campbell to close it to 5-1.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Thunderbirds got the run back when Jillian Matsubara hammered a triple to left and a throwing error put the ball off the dugout door, allowing her to score and extend the edge back to 6-1.
  • Mid-America Christian put together one last gasp in the top of the seventh when Serena Rodriguez slapped a single to left and eventually came around to score on Vizcaya's RBI single to center, but that was all MACU could muster in the 6-2 defeat.
GAME NOTES
  • British Columbia scored its six runs on 10 hits while the Evangels finished with two runs on six hits and committed two errors.
  • Even though Kisbel Vizcaya had her streak of games with a double snapped at four, she still managed to lead the MACU batting efforts after going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
  • Emylee Campbell and Hallie Wilson notched two hits apiece as Campbell finished 2-for-2 while Wilson slashed 2-for-4.
  • Serena Rodriguez scored her first career run as a member of the Evangels.
  • Brooke Wyatt suffered the loss in the circle after allowing three earned runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout through one-plus inning of work.
  • Gia Reynosa tossed three solid innings of relief for MACU, giving up only one earned run on three hits with no walks and struck out four.
  • The defeat to UBC is MACU's first in the first ever meeting between the two programs.
UP NEXT
  • Mid-America Christian will now have an extended break before playing its home-opener on Feb. 20 as the Evangels host a high-profile matchup against No. 5 Oregon Tech with the single game slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch at Allen Field.
