No. 17 Baseball Splits the Day at Wayland Baptist

PLAINVIEW, TEXAS – No. 13 MACU Baseball saw its winning streak come to an end at 12, but bounced back with an 8-6 win in game two over Wayland Baptist behind a great outing by Angel Miranda, who tossed 6.2 innings of shutout ball in relief in the extra-inning win.

GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian outhit Wayland Baptist 11-8 while committing two errors to the Pioneers one, MACU stole five bases however four free passes allowed by the Evangels while not walking once on the offensive end was a big factor to the 6-5 loss. Two of the four walks allowed ended up scoring for WBU.
  • MACU came out the gates hot after leadoff man Taiga Sakuma pounded a single up the middle just past the outstretched glove of Wayland's second basemen Cooper Jauz. Cristopher Munoz worked a long at bat and followed up with a double that one-hopped the center field wall, however Pioneers starter Tate House retired the next three eliminating the chance to score for the Evangels.
  • The Pioneers put runners on second and third of their own in the bottom half of the first, but Evangels starter Fabian Hernandez escaped the jam keeping it a scoreless ballgame.
  • Payton Matthews nearly replicated the start of the first frame with a ground ball single just past Jauz at second, Matthews then swiped second and scored on a liner back up the middle by Giordany Mendoza providing MACU with an early 1-0 advantage.
  • WBU responded in the bottom half of the inning taking a 2-1 lead that included a solo shot to left-center by Sinclair Pimentel.
  • In the top of the third the Evangels recaptured the lead behind a pair of singles from Sakuma and Noel McGarry-Doyle setting up first and third with one away. McGarry-Doyle stole second and advanced to third after the throw from catcher Christian Toledo trickled into center, allowing Sakuma to score in the process tying it up at 2-2.
  • D'Andre Gaines then lined one through the left side scoring McGarry-Doyle and giving the Evangels a 3-2 lead.
  • Munoz picked up his second extra-base hit of the contest this time in home-run fashion on a solo blast to right extending the MACU lead to 4-2 in the fifth.
  • The Pioneers rallied for three runs to take the slight 5-4 edge into the sixth, but MACU answered after Matthews started off the inning with a single and stole second, he then scored on another single to center by Mendoza evening it up at 5-5.
  • Christian Toledo hit a double in the right-center gap for the Pioneers and advanced to third on a flyout to center. With two outs and on third, Toledo scored on a wild pitch by MACU reliever Andrws Acosta allowing WBU to retake the lead up 6-5.
  • With the heart of the order stepping up in the seventh, MACU was unable to get anything going, being retired in order giving the Pioneers a 6-5 win.
  • Payton Matthews led things for the Evangels, he went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, and three stolen bases. With his three stolen bags, Matthews jumped into now tied for fourth in MACU's record books in stolen bases with 18, tying Pete Feurtado (2010) and Edgar Martinez (2019).
  • Christopher Munoz and Taiga Sakuma also finished with multiple hits, Munoz went 2-for-4 for six total bases with a double and homer. Sakuma went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and run scored.
  • Giordany Mendoza continued to swing a hot bat, he went 2-for-3 with two RBI singles.
  • Noel McGarry-Doyle extended his hitting streak to 13 games, he went 1-for-4 with a run and stolen base.
  • D'Andre Gaines added an RBI single and stolen base, he finished 1-for-4 as well.
  • Fabian Hernandez and Andrws Acosta did not have their best stuff today, nonetheless, kept the Evangels in it. Hernandez went 4.1 innings giving up five hits with a season-high three walks for four runs. Acosta picked up the loss, he went 1.2 innings surrendering three hits, a walk and two runs.

GAME NOTES
  • Mid-America Christian put up eight hits and eight runs while committing an error to Wayland Baptist's nine hits, six runs, and one error. Both teams saw excellent long relief outings in Tyler Potts and Angel Miranda as the two starters on both teams combined for just 1.2 innings thrown.
  • The Evangels jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first, a pair of walks to Taiga Sakuma and Noel McGarry-Doyle and a single by Cristopher Munoz set up bases loaded nobody out for D'Andre Gaines. Gaines put a charge into one, sending a no-doubt homer over the left field wall for a grand slam making it 4-0 MACU. Brett Justice then tagged in on the action, he sent a fastball over the right-field wall making it back-to-back jacks giving the Evangels the early 5-0 lead.
  • WBU came ready to swing it as well, they sent out a pair of homers leading to three runs in the bottom half of the first cutting the MACU lead to 5-3.
  • The Pioneers stayed locked in on offense, with Delvis Claudio and Felix Polanco hitting their second homers of the contest leading to another three runs putting Wayland up 6-5 in the second.
  • Angel Miranda continued to cool down the Pioneer bats, he tossed a one-two-three third behind two punchouts keeping it at 6-5 in favor of Wayland.
  • Both Miranda and Pioneers reliever Tyler Potts continued to silence both offenses, with both arms throwing up zeros all the way up until the seventh.
  • Down to the last out, Munoz came up clutch for the Evangels, he banged a two-bagger off the right-center field fence and scored on McGarry-Doyle's clutch single up the middle to tie it up at 6-6.
  • Miranda escaped a first-and-second one-out jam in the seventh, spearing a screaming liner back up the box and catching Arturo Nunez too far off on his secondary lead, throwing to Carlos Medina at the second base bag for the 1-6 double play to push it to extras.
  • A couple of free passes allowed Payton Matthews and Medina to get on to start the eighth, Giordany Mendoza stepped in as a pinch-hitter looking to lay down a sacrifice bunt, however he saw four straight out the zone to load the bases with nobody out.
  • The next two were retired for MACU, but Munoz rose to the occasion dropping a flared single to left that Raphael Beltre-Trinadad slid for, but the ball popped out his glove, providing the Evangels with an 8-6 lead.
  • Miranda wrapped up his brilliant outing with a 1-2-3 eighth picking up two strikeouts in the midst of it providing the Evangels with an 8-6 win.
  • MACU pounced on the Rams with a five-spot in the first on a pair of homers, but did not score again until two outs in the seventh when McGarry-Doyle tied it on a clutch hit up the box.
  • Angel Miranda was fantastic, he went 6.2 innings, allowing just three hits no runs, a walk and fanning seven earning him the win in relief.
  • Cristopher Munoz delivered another great game, he went 3-for-5 with two runs and two runs driven in.
  • Noel McGarry-Doyle picked a perfect time to extend his hitting streak to 14 games on a two-out single to tie it up in the seventh, he finished 1-for-3 with two walks and a run.
  • D'Andre Gaines smashed four RBI's, all coming in one swing of the bat on his grand slam homer, for his sixth blast of the season.
  • Brett Justice hit his team leading ninth homer of the season, he went 1-for-4.
  • Carlos Medina added a two-hit game, he went 2-for-3.
