GAME SUMMARY
  • Things were scoreless through the first inning and a half until Mid-America Chrisitan nabbed the opening run behind the speed of D'Andre Gaines. After walking with one out and nobody on, Gaines stole second and then scored on a line drive down the right field line that was gloved on a slide by Samuel Fabian, however Gaines heads up baserunning enabled him to score all the way from second, crediting Jonluke Hobdy with an RBI sac fly.
  • Wayland Baptist answered back with a two-spot in the third behind back-to-back singles by Riley Watson and Christian Toledo, after a popup the Pioneers loaded the bases on a walk and produced the two runs via a fielders choice and a walk to force in a run.
  • Delvis Claudio drilled a two out double to left, allowing Watson to score and extend the lead to 4-1 in the fourth.
  • WBU remained in rhythm on the offensive side, scoring six more in the fifth behind six hits, a walk and a MACU error. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back homers by Felix Polanco and Fabian.
  • Cristopher Munoz started the sixth with a solo shot to left, the Evangels eventually added two more in the frame after loading them up on a pair of walks to Noel McGarry-Doyle and Jason Thurman along with a Carlos Medina single. Jesse Ortega worked a free-pass to execute a run in his pinch-hit appearance, extending the inning and making it a 9-3 game. With two outs and the bases remaining loaded, Elijah Lee chopped one to short that Sinclair Pimentel misfired to second, pulling Cooper Jauz off the bag and cutting the WBU lead to 9-4.
  • The Pioneers threw four more runs on the scoreboard to once again break it open in the seventh off of five hits and an error by the MACU defense, putting Wayland ahead by a 13-4 advantage.
  • MACU scratched one across in the ninth after three straight singles allowed Taiga Sakuma to score on a wild pitch, but the Evangels could not do much more, resulting in a 13-5 loss.
GAME NOTES
  • Wayland Baptist outhit Mid-America Christian 15-9, the Evangels made four errors while WBU made one.
  • It was overall not the best performance by the Evangels, they allowed seven extra-base hits and tied a season-high with nine walks allowed.
  • MACU stranded nine on base while WBU left 11 on the basepaths.
  • The Pioneers success was greatly due to the bottom of their lineup, their six through nine hitters all finished the contest with two or more hits and scored nine of the 13 runs.
  • MACU also allowed a season-high in stolen bases with six.
  • Cristopher Munoz tabbed two hits after finishing 2-for-4 with a homer and a walk.
  • Carlos Medina cashed in another multi-hit game by going 2-for-5 with a run.
  • Jonluke Hobdy and Jesse Ortega had the other two RBIs for MACU, Hobdy did it via a sac fly and Ortega did it with a walk.
  • Catcher Zachary Stark reached base safely in all three plate appearances, he had the only other extra-base hit outside Munoz's homer with a two-bagger. Stark added a single and walk in his two other plate appearances.
  • Jason Thurman took advantage of his starting opportunity. In just his second start of the season occurring in back-to-back games, he got on twice and finished 1-for-2 with a walk.
  • Outfielders Noel McGarry-Doyle and Taiga Sakuma recorded a hit and a run.
UP NEXT
  • MACU will be tuned into the NAIA Selection Show on Tuesday to see if its name is called as an "at large" bid for the regional round.
