Women’s Basketball Dominate Defensively in 60-43 Win Over John Brown

OKLAHOMA CITY – MACU Women's Basketball holds John Brown to its season-low point total and shooting percentage in an outstanding defensive outing for the Evangels as they win 60-43 on Thursday night inside the Gaulke Activity Center.

TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • First Quarter
    • John Brown opened the scoring first with seven consecutive points in the opening three and a half minutes as the Evangels were unable to see a shot fall during the stretch.
    • Taliah Lee sparked the MACU offense by splashing one in from the top of the key for the first Evangel points. Monique Carter scored four straight points, followed by Sincere Roberts drilling a corner three to give MACU its first lead of the night 10-7, at the first quarter media timeout.
    • The Evangels continued to swarm on the defensive side holding the Golden Eagles scoreless the remainder of the quarter, closing out the opening 10 minutes on a 17-0 run. Roberts laid in the final bucket as MACU led 17-7 after the first.
  • Second Quarter
    • The Golden Eagles started the second much like the first, on the front foot with seven straight points to trim the lead down to three. Lee knocked down a second triple for MACU. However, JBU cashed in for three on three straight possessions to trail 23-21 with four minutes remaining in the quarter.
    • Turnovers infested the remaining four minutes for both teams. Carter converted a pair of free throws to give her six first half points, and a 30-23 first half MACU advantage.
  • Third Quarter
    • MACU continued its defensive dominance into the third quarter and extended its lead to double digits just three minutes in. Although shots weren't falling in the quarter, the Evangels continued to convert from the free throw line as both Roberts and Mia Smith connected on a pair.
    • Lee continued her dominant night with a finish at the rim on the final offensive possession of the quarter for MACU, Taliah scored her 15th point as MACU led 42-34 going into the last.
  • Fourth Quarter
    • The Evangels scored the first two field goals of the fourth to quickly jump back up double digits. Mia Smith and Caitlynn Jordan both finished around the basket to give MACU a 46-34 lead.
    • MACU rallied off eight straight as Jordan and Lee continued to dominate the paint and take its biggest lead of the night at 58-38 with three minutes left.
    • Roberts laid it up and in for the final MACU points and closed out a dominant defensive performance by a final score of 60-43.
GAME NOTES
  • MACU shot 42.3% (22-52) from the field, 5-17 (29.4%) from three-point, and 11-13 (84.6%) from the free throw line. The Golden Eagles shot a season-low 21.3% (13-61) from the field, 6-28 (21.4%) from behind the arc, but 11-13 (84.6%) from the line.  
  • Mid-America Christian had three players finish with double-digit scoring led by Taliah Lee who finished with 19 points off 3-5 from deep. Monique Carter added in 11 and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line, while Sincere Roberts chipped in 10.  
  • Taliah Lee grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Caitlynn Jordan finished with eight boards.  
  • MACU dominated defensively recording six blocks led by Taliah Lee who recorded three, while Caitlynn Jordan sent back two. The Evangels also forced 15 turnovers off seven steals. Six different Evangels tallied a steal as Lee had a team-high two.
  • Mid-America Christian improves to 11-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, as the Evangels sit joint second with Nelson, remaining just one game back of the SAC leaders Langston.   
  • MACU squared up the all-time record against John Brown at 21-21, winning four consecutive over the Golden Eagles.
