Women’s Basketball Thumps Texas Wesleyan 70-45 on Senior Day

OKLAHOMA CITY – The MACU Women's Basketball team outscored Texas Wesleyan 37-17 in the second half, allowing just two points in the entire fourth quarter in the Evangels 70-45 Senior Day win on Saturday afternoon. Talayah Thomas splashed home a career-high six three-pointers in her 23-point and seven-assist outing in her final game inside the Gaulke.

TOP PERFORMERS GAME SUMMARY
  • First Quarter
    • MACU jumped on the offense early with a 10-6 lead in the opening two and half minutes, thanks to five quick Caitlynn Jordan points. Mia Smith added three of her own during the run.
    • The lead grew to seven with four minutes left as Mia Smith was up to six points with a three-pointer from the top of the key. MACU led 15-8.
    • Texas Wesleyan brought it to within one on the final offensive possession, but Monique Carter's smooth jumper restored the Evangels' three-point lead at 19-16 after the first quarter.
  • Second Quarter
    • The Evangels went ice cold in the first seven and a half minutes of the second quarter, scoring just three points during the stretch. The Rams' lead was 28-22 with two and a half minutes left.
    • However, MACU closed the quarter on an 11-0 run with threes coming from Allie Harris, Talayah Thomas, and Monique Carter who splashed in the final one at the first half buzzer from 35 feet. The Evangels stormed back in front and led 33-28 after the opening 20 minutes.
  • Third Quarter
    • Thomas connected for the third time from range coming out of the halftime break. Followed by paint points from Sincere Roberts and Taliah Lee to quickly jump up 10 points.
    • Both offenses exchanged a series of three-pointers down to the final two minutes of the quarter. The Evangels led 53-39 at this point.
    • The Rams closed the quarter with four straight points to trim the lead back down to 10, as MACU's lead was 53-43 after the third quarter of action.
  • Fourth Quarter
    • Talayah Thomas came out red hot from deep with three consecutive triples on a 9-0 run herself in the first four minutes of the final quarter to blow the lead up to 19.
    • Taliah Lee added a pair in the paint to get her to double digit points with 10. Thomas got to the rack for a 23-point outing and to give MACU a 68-43 lead with two minutes left.
    • The Rams scored their first points of the quarter with four seconds left in the game, as MACU completely shut down the TWU attack allowing just those two points. The Evangels outscored the Rams 37-17 in the second half to run away with a 70-45 win on Senior Day.
 
GAME NOTES
  • MACU shot 26-63 (41.3%) from the field, 10-29 (34.5%) from 3-pt, and an efficient 8-9 (88.9%) from the free throw line. The Rams finished 14-54 (25.9%) from the field, 4-22 (18.2%) from behind the arc, and 13-15 (86.7%) from the stripe.
  • The Evangels had three players score in double digit figures led by Senior Talayah Thomas who scored consecutive 20+ point games with 23 points off a career-high six made three-pointers. Sincere Roberts and Taliah Lee both added 10 apiece.  
  • MACU dominated defensively once again, holding the Rams to 25% shooting from the field and under 50 points for the seventh time this season. The Evangels forced 20 turnovers, while swatting away six shots. Three-time SAC Defensive Player of the Week Taliah Lee had five blocks herself, after tallying a career-high six blocks against Nelson last time out.
  • The Evangels finished with 21 team assists, the second-highest mark this season. Thomas led the way with a career-high seven, to go with her 23 points. 
  • Mid-America Christian improves to 15-5 in Sooner Athletic Conference play, sitting one game back of second place, and one game ahead of the fourth-place spot heading into the final weekend of the regular season.  
  • MACU continues to dominate the all-time record against TWU, improving to 23-7 and splitting the two regular season meetings.

  • Mid-America Christian hits the road for the final weekend of regular season play, as the Evangels head West to play Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday night tipping off at 6 p.m. in Goodwell, Okla. MACU will face Wayland Baptist Saturday afternoon in Plainview, Texas tipping off at 2 p.m. for the SAC regular season contest.
