Men’s Basketball Rematched against Wayland Baptist to Open SAC Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY – After wrapping up the regular season at Wayland Baptist on Saturday, the MACU Men's Basketball team will get an immediate rematch against the Pioneers in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Presented by Athletic Solutions on Wednesday night as the quarterfinal round being played at Abe Lemons Arena is slated for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

SEASON REPORT
  • Record: 19-9 (13-9 SAC)
  • Last Game: Lost at Wayland Baptist – 82-78 – Feb. 21, 2026 – Plainview, Texas
  • Stat Leaders:
  • Team Notes:
    • Mid-America Christian put up an incredibly tough fight against Wayland Baptist on the road and on the Pioneers' Senior Day inside the Hutcherson Center on Saturday. It was a back-and-forth contest as MACU rallied by nine down at the half to hold a six-point advantage midway through the half. While MACU managed to cut it to a two-point deficit twice in the final 62 seconds, the Evangels were unable to come up with a crucial stop without fouling and a costly turnover with 11 seconds left in a three-point game ultimate snapped MACU's chances.
    • With the result, Mid-America Christian earned the No. 6 seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament with the new format of the tourney being played at a central site, reverting from the format where the top four seeds hosted the Quarterfinal round.
    • If the Evangels are able to get by the Pioneers on Wednesday night, they would play the winner of the No. 2 Langston/No. 7 John Brown quarter at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
    • The junior duo of Morris Williams and Corey Skillman have become the centerpieces of the MACU offense over the last month. Williams enters the tourney as the team's leading scorer, as his 16.8 ppg this season ranks as the seventh-best single season scoring average for an Evangel in the NAIA Era (2007-present). Since hitting a pair of clutch shots in the win at Central Christian on Feb. 7, Skillman has been a more integral part of the MACU offense, averaging 14.8 ppg on a 48.8 percent shooting clip, including going 10-of-22 (45.5 percent) from three-point range and 22-for-26 (84.6 percent) from the free throw line.

  • Team Notes:
    • In a tightly contested SAC standings, Wayland Baptist earned the No. 3 seed entering the league tournament after posting a 16-6 league mark and went 22-6 overall.
    • Overall, the Pioneers enter the postseason as the third-most prolific offensive team in the SAC, averaging 82.8 ppg while shooting at the highest percentage in the league (47.8) and converting the fourth-highest three-point percentage (35.8). WBU also shoots at a solid clip from the foul line, ranking fifth at 72.1 percent.
    • On the defensive side, Wayland comes in allowing the fourth-fewest points in the conference (71.3 ppg), holding its opposition to the fifth-lowest shooting percentage (42.1) and the second-lowest three-point clip (31.4). It makes Wednesday's matchup with MACU a compelling one as the Evangels are the SAC's best three-point shooting team at 37.0 percent.
    • Since becoming eligible to play mid-season, senior guard Jamari Lawrence has become a dynamic scoring presence for the Pioneers, averaging 19.1 ppg while also averaging 4.7 assists per contest. Junior forward Rico Yarbrough has also been an imposing player on the inside, averaging 15.9 ppg while also averaging the sixth-most rebounds (6.8) and ranks fifth in field goal percentage (56.5).
    • The Evangels will be seeking to get back on-track against the Pioneers since their road loss on Saturday as that result snapped a five-game win streak that MACU had over Wayland Baptist. When the two teams squared off inside the Gaulke Activity Center on Jan. 8, the Evangels handed the Pioneers a 79-66 defeat, making it only the second time WBU lost by double-figures on the season while scoring its second-lowest output on the year.
