Anthony Nero

Anthony Nero enters his 13th season as assistant coach with the Evangels. Nero brings more than 25 years of coaching experience and is a key factor in recruiting and player development. 

Nero has been instrumental in the Evangels' ascension into an upper echelon program in the Sooner Athletic Conference and the NAIA, that culminated with the program's first NAIA National Championship in 2016 as well as the the program's first 30-win season in the NAIA era and No. 1 seed in the NAIA Tournament in 2020 before the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

 "Coach Nero's passion for helping young people succeed is truly a special sight," MACU Head Coach Josh Gamblin said.  "He is a man of extremely high character who brings a wealth of experience to our staff."

Nero first came to MACU in 1992 and played four seasons under Head Coach Willie Holley. As a guard and forward, Nero helped guide the Evangels to three NCCAA D-II Southwest Region Championships in 1993, 1995, and 1996. After his playing days ended, Nero took the position of Athletic Director for the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of Oklahoma City. He remained in that position until 2002.

Nero is the Assistant Pastor at Bryant Avenue Baptist Church in Oklahoma City and has a passion for helping young men and women live their lives for the Lord. When not at church, Nero is the Head Coach of the Oklahoma City Sun, an AAU 15 and under boys team. He has been a coach for AAU for the past 23 years.

Nero is married to his wife, Terrie and has two daughters.
