Dustin Welch is entering his second year as the Graduate Assistant Coach of the Evangels' men's basketball program for the 2020-21 season. Welch will also serve as the Head Coach of the JV team, entering into his second year in that role.
Last year, Welch helped guide the Evangels to one of its best seasons in the 50-plus history of the program as Mid-America Christian ended the campaign with a 30-2 overall record and won the program's second Sooner Athletic Conference Championship by going 19-1 in league play.
Welch served as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the 2018-19 season, mentoring an Evangels team that earned its third bid to the NAIA National Championship Tournament and upset No. 1 seed Tougaloo (Miss.) 73-64 in the first round. MACU closed out the year with a 21-13 record after a hard-fought loss to William Carey (Miss.) in the second round.
During the 2017-18 academic year, Welch served as the Head Coach of the Sante Fe Middle School boys' basketball team while working as a social studies teacher for the institution.Â
Welch returned to his roots after a four-year playing career with the Evangels from 2013-17. Welch competed for the JV team for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons before acting as a player-manager for the 2015-16 NAIA National Championship Team as well as the 2016-17 season, where he played in three games and scored four points.
Welch was the second player in the history of the MACU men's basketball program to be named a two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete after graduating in 2017 with his Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Social Studies Education. Welch is currently pursuing a Master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction and will be graduating in December.
