10/22/07 - Baseball Team Helps Feed Thousands
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University baseball players took a break from their busy schedules as student athletes to give back to their community. Members of the team rolled up their sleeves and worked at the Regional Food Bank on October 13, 2007 to feed over five thousand people.
"It was such an amazing experience," Head Men's Baseball Coach Jason Blackwell said. "It feels good knowing that we helped that many people."
The players packaged 1,974 pounds of chicken and bagged 4,456 pounds of frozen french fries. A total of 6,430 pounds of food was packing with an average weight of 1.3 pounds per meal.
"I was very proud of the team," Coach Blackwell said. "They worked hard and enjoyed themselves at the same time."
The Evangels made an equivalent of 5,876 meals which will be distributed to families, food shelters, and churches all over the United States. The Regional Food Bank, which distributes the meals, is an organization that helps the less fortunate.
"I believe it is important for the student-athletes to reach out and touch a hand," Athletic Director Willie Holley said. "I am proud of what the baseball team accomplished."
The MACU athletic department encourages all of the sports to reach out and be a positive influence in the community.
