11.29.07 - OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.- The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels fell in their Sooner Athletic Conference opener against the Rogers State University Hillcats Thursday, Nov. 29. The Hillcats defeated the Lady Evangels 67-63.
Rogers State forced 23 MACU turnovers and held MACU to just 22% shooting from behind the arc. The Lady Evangels and Hillcats grabbed 28 rebounds a piece.
`We played hard and I thought we played a good game," Head Coach Josh Lind said. "We just failed to make the big plays at the end."
The Hillcats scored the first bucket of the game, but the Lady Evangels answered with a three-point basket and held the lead throughout most of the first half. The first half was back and forth with the largest lead of the half coming when MACU held a 34-28 lead with less than a minute left in the first half.
MACU had a slim 36-33 advantage at halftime.
The second half was much like the first half, but with Rogers State controlling the lead instead of MACU. The Hillcats opened the second half on a 14-4 run, but the Lady Evangels answered with a mini run of their own and trimmed the lead to one possession mid-way through the second half.
The second half continued to be back and forth, but the Lady Evangels failed to get over the hump. The Lady Evangels missed a field goal attempt with seconds remaining to tie the game and Rogers State held on to the win.
Senior Courtney Sorrels scored a team high 19 points to go along with her five rebounds and four steals. Freshman April Hale scored 13 of the Lady Evangels 19 bench points, while Junior Treasure McCoy added 12 points and five rebounds.
On Saturday, Dec. 1, MACU will travel to Siloam Springs, Arkansas and battle John Brown University in a SAC showdown. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
