MACU Fights for First SAC Win

Jan. 12, 2008

1.12.08 - SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Mid-America Christian University Lady Evangels fought off the St. Gregory's University Lady Cavaliers to pick up their first Sooner Athletic Conference win Saturday, Jan 12. The Lady Evangels defeated the Lady Cavaliers 58-53.

MACU stepped up their defensive play in the second half, holding SGU to just 18% shooting overall and 14% from the free throw line. The Lady Evangels made key stops in the closing moments to come away with the win.

"We have been close several times this year in conference play," Head Coach Josh Lind said. "It feels good to finish this one off and get that first win."

The Lady Evangels fell behind 4-0 early in the first half, but they went on a 7-0 run to claim the lead. The Lady Cavaliers went on a 13-2 run mid-way through the first half and took a 30-19 lead at the 3:52 mark.

MACU picked up their defense and cut the SGU lead. The Lady Evangels went on a 10-2 run to close out the first half. Senior Courtney Sorrels anchored the MACU run, contributing five points and three steals.

The Lady Evangels went into the locker room at halftime with the momentum, trailing 32-29.

MACU continued their momentum in the beginning of the second half, scoring the first six points and taking a 35-32 lead. The Lady Evangels never relinquished their lead.

MACU held off a late SGU surge due to strong defensive and rebounding. Freshman April Hale stood strong for a key charge, while Junior Treasure McCoy grabbed a key offensive rebound after a missed MACU free throw.

"Our defense was the deciding factor in the game, especially in the closing minutes," Coach Lind said. "I told the girls that defense not offense would decide the game and we made the defensive plays down the stretch."

Sorrels finished the game with 10 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Freshman Melissa Aguilar chipped in eight points, six rebounds, and five assists.

MACU will battle Wayland Baptist University in the Gaulke Activity Center Thursday, Jan 17. Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m.
