March 18, 2010

3.17.10 - Shawnee, Okla.- Senior left handed pitcher David Wynn only allowed five hits in Mid-America Christian University's nine inning 6-5 victory over Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Oklahoma Baptist University on Wednesday night at Bison Field.

The Evangels held a 4-2 lead after five innings but the Bison rallied late with the help of two Evangel errors knotting the score 5-5 after eight innings.

Sam Lewis led off the top of the ninth with a single and was then bunted into scoring position by Matt Allen. He scored the game-winning run off a single through the hole at shortstop by James Frederick.

Despite OBU's late rally and three errors in the game, the Evangels improve to 11-10 overall with a 4-5 SAC record. The Bison fall to 2-5 in the SAC standings with a 19-6 overall record.

After the Bison took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a MACU error and three of OBU's five hits on the day, the Evangels rallied, producing four runs off five hits in the fifth inning.

The Evangels added to their lead in the sixth. James Porter led off the inning with a single followed by a double by Scott Mulhearn putting runners on second and third with no outs. Lewis grounded out to the shortstop, plating Porter.

The Bison battled back to tie the game at five runs apiece with two runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth. An error led to runs in both innings. However, the tie was short lived as MACU got the go ahead run in the top of the ninth. A solid closing performance by Ivan Juevera, with two strikeouts and a fly out in the bottom of the inning sealed the win for the Evangles.

The top of the order for the Bison (hitters 1-4) went 0-17 from the plate with seven strikeouts. The Evangels produced 13 hits while the Bison were only able to muster-up five.

David Wynn got the win on the mound, pitching seven complete innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out nine. Juvera got the save, pitching the final two innings, allowing no runs with striking out two.

The series continues on Thursday at Evangel Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
