No. 25 Lubbock Christian cruises past Lady Evangels, 98-73

Lubbock, Texas - The No. 25-ranked Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps jumped on the Mid-America Christian Lady Evangels early and then cruised to a 98-73 win Saturday afternoon (Jan. 29) in Lubbock, Texas.

The win salvages the Lady Chaps a split in the season series with the Lady Evangels, as MACU knocked off then No. 20-ranked LCU 76-68 in overtime earlier this season.

The Lady Chaps broke the game open early with a 9-0 spurt fueled by five points from Brittany Hampton for a quick double-digit lead at 14-4 less than five minutes into the contest.

Consecutive jumpers from Nicole Wittman and Tranecia Smith brought the Lady Evangels (10-10, 6-8 SAC) to within six and later a three-point play by Wittman kept the Lady Evangels within seven at 35-28 with 6:16 left in the opening half.

From that point, the Lady Chaps took complete command with a 19-3 run that stretched the lead to a 54-31 cushion.

LCU (14-6, 11-3 SAC) took a 54-34 lead at the half.

Severyn Smith then hit a three to cap a 9-3 run to open the second half that built the lead to 63-37.

The Lady Chaps kept their distance the rest of the way, as a pair of free throws by Brittany Johnson that cut the lead to 20 was as close as the Lady Evangels came.

Four Lady Evangels reached double-figure scoring, led by Smith's 17 points. Wittman and Johnson each scored 15 and Marcy Robinson added 10. Wittman and Robinson each led the Lady Evangels with five rebounds, while Michelle Hardimon dished out a team-high four assists.

Emily Atkins led all scorers with 21 for the Lady Chaps, with Courtney Wilson scoring 20 and recording a game-high eight boards.

The Lady Chaps shot a blazing 61.2 percent for the game and held the Lady Evangels to only a 36.6 percent (22-of-60) shooting clip.

The Lady Evangels will now return home to host Oklahoma Christian next Thursday evening (Feb. 3) at 6 p.m. in the Gaulke Activity Center.
