Five players score in double-figures to lead Lubbock Christian past Evangels, 95-69

Lubbock, Texas - Matt Read led five players in double-figures to spark the Lubbock Christian Chaps to a 95-69 win over the Mid-America Christian Evangels Saturday afternoon (Jan. 29) in Lubbock, Texas.

The Evangels hung around early as a jumper by Cameron Langster hit a jumper that made it 14-12 after the Chaps had built a seven-point lead earlier.

Tyler Kennedy then hit back-to-back threes and Russ Permenter hit consecutive jumpers to lead a 13-0 run that put the Chaps in front by 15 at the 10:26 mark of the opening half.

It was a 29-16 deficit when a layup from Donell Lewis and a three by Nathan Pratt helped the Evangels fight back to within eight with 6:14 left.

The Chaps extended the lead out to 11 at 40-29 going into the half.

LCU (12-8, 7-7 SAC) broke the game open in the second half as Read began a 9-1 spurt with a three and then capped the run with a jumper that made it a 19-point game with 16:18 remaining.

A pair of free throws by Langster that cut the lead to 17 would bring the Evangels (10-10, 6-8 SAC) as close as they would come the rest of the way.

Van Craven led the Evangels with 10 points and Langster added six and a team-high five rebounds. Lewis dished out a team-high six assists.

Read's 19 points came on 8-of-10 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Rashad Sample scored 15 and had a game-high 11 assists. Kenny Hewitt added 14 and Kennedy chipped in with 13. Permenter contributed 12 points for the Chaps.

The Chaps shot a blistering 65 percent (41-of-63) from the floor, while limiting the Evangels to only a 37.9 percent (30-of-79) shooting clip.

MACU out-rebounded the Chaps 41-37 overall and forced 16 turnovers.

The Evangels will now return to the friendly confines of the Gaulke Activity Center to host Oklahoma Christian on Thursday night (Feb. 3) at 8 p.m.
