Lady Evangels rock Bethany College 70-37 in home opener

Oklahoma City, Okla. -- Playing before a packed crowd that included 50 members of the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, the Mid-America Christian Lady Evangels gave the fans something to cheer by routing the Bethany College (Kan.) Swedes 70-37 in their home opener Friday night (Nov. 11) at the Gaulke Activity Center.

The Lady Evangels didn't waste anytime getting going, as Parris Price scored five quick points to fuel a 13-2 lead at the 11:50 mark of the first half.

It was an eight-point lead when Price nailed a pair of threes to spark a 13-3 spurt as the Lady Evangels pulled out to a commanding 28-10 lead.

The Swedes fought back as a three-point play by Tamara Garner capped a 10-2 run that cut the lead to 30-20 with 2:08 left in the opening half.

Erica Love then scored the next six points as the Lady Evangels closed the half on a 6-1 run to lead 36-21 at the break.

After Garner scored the first bucket of the second stanza, Brittany Woodard and Erica Jones combined to score all nine points of a 9-4 spurt to make it a 20-point game again at 45-25 with 15:48 remaining.

The Lady Evangels continued to pull away as a three by Jones and a free throw from Brooklyn Bell made it 54-27.

A trey by Katie Young made it a 30-point lead at 66-36 with 1:20 left and Kourtni Williams' putback with four seconds left created the final margin of 33 points.

The Lady Evangels (3-0) used a stifling defensive effort to force 31 turnovers and limit the Swedes to only a 30 percent (15-of-50) shooting clip from the field.

Jones scored a game-high 16 points, including hitting 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.  Williams had a double-double of 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Price had a solid floor game of 13 points, eight assists and five boards.  Nicole Wittman also reached double-figure rebounds with 10.

Heather Eddings scored a team-high 11 points for the Swedes.

The undefeated Lady Evangels will now turn around and host Dallas Christian on Monday evening (Nov. 14) at 6 p.m.
