Evangels run past Oklahoma Wesleyan, 81-52

Oklahoma City, Okla. -- When the Mid-America Christian Evangels and Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles met just two weeks ago, it was a nip and tuck game to the very end with the Evangels slipping by with an 81-76 win in Bartlesville, Okla.  This time, it was a completely different story as the Evangels took charge in the first half and cruised to an 81-52 win over the Eagles in a non-conference matchup Tuesday night (Nov. 29) at the Gaulke Activity Center.

Four quick points by Brandon Williams gave the Evangels an early 9-2 lead and three straight buckets by George Haynes made it 21-12 with 9:13 left.

Three free throws by Williams and a putback by Blake Larson grew the lead to 26-12.

MACU continued to pull away as inside scores from Larson and Darius Gregory made it 33-14 with 6:34 remaining in the opening half.

After a shot by Shawn Seymour briefly cut the lead to 14, Haynes answered with a basket of his own and then scored again as the clock wound down in the first half to open up a 45-25 lead at the break.

The Evangels maintained a comfortable lead in the second half and expanded the edge to 28 as Cameron Langster capped a 9-0 run to make it 74-46.

A three by Gabriel Mason then gave the Evangels (6-1) their largest lead of the night at 81-48 with 1:39 remaining.

Williams and Haynes each scored 17 to lead four Evangels in double-figures.  Charlie Shorter scored 17 along with a game-high seven assists, while Gregory added 10.  Blake Larson led everybody with a career-high 15 rebounds.  Larson's 15 rebound total is the most by an Evangel since Haynes grabbed 16 boards in the 2009-10 season.

The Evangels' defensive effort limited the Eagles (4-7) to only 32.8 percent (21-of-64) shooting overall and 29.4 percent (10-of-34) in the second half.

MACU held a 49-41 advantage overall in rebounds, with a 19-16 edge on the offensive glass.

Next up will be a stiff test at No. 18-ranked Southern Nazarene in a Sooner Athletic Conference showdown Thursday night (Nov. 29) at 8 p.m. in Bethany, Okla.
