Evangels light up the scoreboard for most points since joining the NAIA in 119-87 rout of Southwestern Christian

Oklahoma City, Okla. -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels placed seven players in double-figures in tallying their highest point total since joining the NAIA as they routed the Southwestern Christian University Eagles 119-87 in a non-conference matchup Monday night (Dec. 12) at the Gaulke Activity Center.  The 119 points is also the most scored within the Sooner Athletic Conference so far this season.

After the first nine minutes of the opening half was nip and tuck with six ties and four lead changes, the Evangels gained some separation as threes by Brandon Williams and Gabriel Mason sparked a 14-5 run for a 33-24 lead at the 6:42 mark.

Ray Hilliard and Keenan Seahorn scored to keep the Eagles close at 37-32, but consecutive treys by Williams and another from Camilo Valencia suddenly put the Evangels up 14.

The Evangels (5-4) went on to a 53-42 lead at the half as a bucket by Marc Traylor and a three from Mladen Jarpun cut a 16-point lead down to 11.

It was a nine-point advantage when Valencia got hot from the field, nailing two from beyond the arc and scoring eight straight Evangel points that made it 63-50.

MACU continued to pull away as back-to-back shots from Cameron Langster and Darius Gregory fueled a 10-2 spurt that gave the Evangels their largest lead to that point of 73-52 with 13:57 left.

A bucket by Shorter stretched the lead to 26 and the Evangels' biggest lead of the night came on a three-point play by Mason for a 115-82 advantage at the 1:23 mark.

Shorter paced the Evangels with 19 points, followed by Williams with 18.  Mason scored 15 on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, while Gregory, Langster and Valencia each added 14.  Josh Smith also reached double-digit scoring with 10 points and also pulled down six rebounds.

Valencia dished out a game-high nine assists and Gregory led the way with nine boards.

Glen Irwin led the Eagles (5-7) with 19 points to go along with a team-high six rebounds.  Traylor and Chris Potter each scored 10.

The Evangels shot 52.4 percent (44-of-84) overall, including a scorching 64.3 percent (27-of-42) clip in the second half.

MACU held a 47-38 edge overall on the boards and forced 22 turnovers on the night.

The Evangels will now turn around and play an exhibition contest at the NCAA D-II No. 25-ranked Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys tomorrow night (Dec. 13) at 7 p.m. in Russellville, Ark.

MACU played Arkansas Tech tough at home earlier this year, trailing by only three midway through the second half.  But the Wonder Boys pulled out an 87-64 win back on Nov. 19.
