Evangels fall in closing seconds to Rogers State, 73-71

Oklahoma City, Okla. -- The Rogers State Hillcats scored with just five seconds left to snap a 71-71 tie and then held on for a 73-71 win over the Mid-America Christian Evangels Monday night (Feb. 14) at the Gaulke Activity Center.

The Hillcats had the ball up 71-69 when Deveric Taylor was called for an offensive foul on the inbounds play with seven seconds left.

That led to a pair of game-tying free throws by Cameron Langster that knotted the score at 71-71.

Matt Kellogg then beat everyone down the court for a go-ahead layup that put the Hillcats on top.

The Evangels though still had a chance, but a potential game-winning three by Bradley Cosby bounced in and out at the buzzer.

MACU had gotten back into it after trailing by as many as 11 in the second half.

After Larry Cox scored inside to put the Hillcats (15-9, 11-6 SAC) on top 57-46, the Evangels went on a 13-2 run and pulled even on a three by Nathan Pratt with 4:30 left.

Taylor then split a pair at the charity stripe to put RSU back in front, but John Shodipo hit a layup to give the Evangels their first lead since the 2:35 mark of the first half.

Shodipo led the Evangels with 12 points and Donell Lewis scored nine along with a game-high five assists.  Blake Larson led the Evangels with five rebounds.

Taylor and John Boyd shared game-high honors for the Hillcats with 14 points apiece.  Maurice Rutherford added 13 and Kellogg chipped in with 10.  Boyd, Cox and Rutherford each led the way with seven boards.

After shooting just 26.9 percent (7-of-26) in the opening half, the Evangels warmed up to a 46.7 percent (14-of-30) shooting clip in the second half.

The Evangels (11-13, 7-11 SAC) were out-rebounded 42-36 overall but forced 20 turnovers on the night.

Next up for MACU will be a matchup at No. 9-ranked Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday night (Feb. 17).  Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla.
