Lady Evangels fall 48-28 to No. 18 Southern Nazarene

Oklahoma City, Okla. -- Senior Brittany Johnson tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds to culminate Senior Night, but it wasn't enough as the No. 18-ranked Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm were too much defensively in a 48-28 win over the Mid-America Christian Lady Evangels Thursday evening (Feb. 24) at the Gaulke Activity Center.

The Lady Evangels hung tough early on as consecutive buckets from Marcy Robinson and Johnson gave them a 7-5 lead.

But that's where the Crimson Storm began to assert themselves as they held the Lady Evangels to only one field goal over the next nine minutes to fuel a 16-4 spurt that made it a 10-point game with 2:28 remaining in the opening half.

A basket by Tranecia Smith and a three-point play by senior April Hale brought the Lady Evangels within five and they went on to trail 23-16 at the half.

Five points from Oumoul Thiam in the first five minutes of the second half extended the lead to 15 at the 14:42 mark.

SNU led by at least 12 the rest of the way as they continued their defensive prowess by limiting the Lady Evangels to only 17.2 percent (5-of-29) shooting in second half and 19.6 percent (11-of-56) for the game.

Johnson's game-high 14 points came on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 at the charity stripe.  Senior Melissa Aguilar pulled down nine rebounds.

Sharmeda Johnson scored 12 points along with a game-high 13 boards, Thiam also contributed 12 points.  Jaime Bottger added 10.

The Lady Evangels solid defensively as well, holding the 18th ranked Crimson Storm to a 33.3 percent (16-of-48) shooting clip overall.

MACU will wrap up the regular season at USAO Saturday evening (Feb. 26) at 6 p.m. in Chickasha, Okla.  The Lady Evangels currently sit in the ninth spot in the SAC, one game behind Oklahoma Christian.  The top eight squads advance to the SAC Postseason Tournament.
