Evangels hit clutch shots in second half to defeat Oklahoma Christian, 83-78

Oklahoma City, Okla. -- Brandon Williams scored a team-high 20 points and Donell Lewis dished out a season-high 11 assists to lead the Mid-America Christian Evangels to an 83-78 victory over the Oklahoma Christian Eagles Thursday night (Feb. 3) at the Gaulke Activity Center.

The game was a nail-biter down the stretch as the second half featured 11 ties and 19 lead changes.

Jeff Crocker made the first of two free throws to forge the final tie at 75-75 and then hit the second to give the Eagles a one-point lead.

Williams then put the Evangels in front with a huge three and after a defensive stop, the Gaulke Activity Center exploded as Nathan Pratt nailed a clutch trey with the shot clock running down to give the Evangels their biggest lead of the game at 81-76 with just 23 seconds remaining.

After a layup from Will Reinke cut the lead to three, Cameron Langster stepped to the line and sealed the victory with a pair of critical free throws.

The Evangels had to rally from a nine-point deficit in the opening half as a three-point play by Devan White capped an 8-0 run to put the Eagles up 37-28 at the 2:44 mark.

Blake Larson then helped the Evangels close out the half on an 8-2 spurt with five straight points as MACU came within 39-36 at the break.

Reinke began the second half with a bucket in the paint, but consecutive treys by Williams and Pratt gave the Evangels their first lead since the 13:05 mark of the first half.

The Eagles pulled back out to a four-point lead on two occasions, but once again Williams and Pratt struck for back-to-back threes to put the Evangels back in front.

Williams' 20 points came on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.  Pratt had 14 and hit 4-of-9 from three-point distance.  Lewis added 10 to go along with his game-high 11 assists.  John Shodipo had a team-high five rebounds for the Evangels (11-10, 7-8 SAC).

Reinke led all scorers with 29 points to go along with a game-high nine boards for the Eagles (14-8, 8-7 SAC).

The Evangels were out-rebounded 35-32 overall, but held a 10-7 edge on the offensive glass.

The Evangels will now play at No. 24-ranked Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday night (Feb. 5) at 8 p.m. in Alva, Okla.  The Evangels knocked off NWOSU 92-83 earlier this season in Oklahoma City.
