Oklahoma City, Okla. --
Jose Flores started the first game and got the win, then homered in the nightcap to lead the Evangels to a doubleheader sweep of the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 15) at Evangel Field in OKC.
It was the Coyotes who got off to the strong start in the opener as Adam Jones led off the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Zach Willand in the first inning.
The Coyotes then added three more in the second on RBI singles from Nick Hartzell and Reggie York. Jones also hit his second triple of the game to score Hartzell.
The Evangels got on the board with two runs on a two-run double by
Kevin Parsons in the bottom of the second and then exploded for six runs in the third, spearheaded by a three-run homer by
Elfry Abad and a two-run double by
Jeff Eubank.
Jon Jon Lemos also singled home Eubank in the inning.
The Coyotes clawed closer with single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Evangels created more breathing room with a five-run fifth inning that featured a two-run homer by Eubank and an RBI triple by
Luis Martinez.
After MACU added another run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 14-6 lead, the Coyotes refused to go quietly and made things interesting with a six-run seventh inning.
Four of the runs came after two were out on three consecutive singles. The Coyotes then had runners at first and second with the go-ahead run at the plate, but Maximilliano Lopez came on in relief and induced a game ending fielders choice groundout to end the game.
Flores was the winning pitcher, throwing four innings and giving up six runs and striking out three.
Martinez went 3-of-4 at the plate for the Evangels and Abad and Eubank each drove in four runs.
The Evangels took control early in the nightcap with a five-run first inning, capped by a three-run shot by Flores. Eubank and
David Rhoads also had run-scoring singles in the big inning.
After allowing two runs in the second, MACU starter
Pedro Perez was extremely effective, giving up only one more run over his next four innings of work to get the win.
With the score 6-3 going to the bottom of the seventh,
Ivan Juvera came on and pitched a scoreless frame to pick up the save.
After starter Ryan Leasure gave up five earned runs in two innings, Lance Johnson and Willand combined to toss four scoreless innings from that point for the Coyotes.
Rhoads and
Eridani Dume each had two hits in the game to lead the Evangels.
The Evangels will now get back into conference play by hosting St. Gregory's on Friday afternoon (Mar. 18) at 2 p.m.
