Lubbock, Texas -- The Mid-America Christian Evangels were three outs away from a series victory at the No. 5-ranked Lubbock Christian Chaps, but the Chaps showed why they're the fifth-ranked team in the country by rallying for five runs to take the rubber game 11-10 Saturday afternoon (Mar. 26) in Lubbock, Texas.
The Chaps rally came after the Evangels had battled back from a two-run deficit to take the lead with four runs in the eighth and added two more in the ninth for a 10-6 lead.
Jon Jon Lemos and
Elfry Abad each hit RBI doubles in the four-run eighth, with
Luis Martinez producing an RBI single to fuel the big inning for the Evangels.
Two more tallies came in the ninth when
Adrian Bravo-Carmona doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a run-scoring single by
Jose Flores.
Lemos then drove in another run with an RBI single for the Evangels' 10th run of the game.
But the Chaps were not near through as Ryan Burnaman began the ninth with a single and then scored following three straight walks that made it 10-7.
The Evangels then got a force out at the plate with the bases remaining loaded. But two errors led to the bases clearing to tie the score.
Two straight intentional walks to attempt to set up a force play led to a game-winning, walk-off single by Brent Leslie.
MACU starter
David Wynn lasted eight innings, giving up five earned runs with 14 strikeouts.
Flores went 4-of-5 at the plate for the Evangels with a pair of RBI. Lemos and
David Rhoads also drove in two runs, with reigning SAC Hitter of the Week
Jeff Eubank going 3-of-5 with one RBI.
Starting pitcher Mike Marshall also produced at the plate for the Chaps, going 2-of-4 with three RBI.
On the mound, Marshall gave up four runs in seven innings and struck out 10.
The Evangels will next play a non-conference matchup at Hillsdale College on Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 30) in Moore, Okla.
