Evangels swept by Rogers State, 16-3 and 8-5

Oklahoma City, Okla.  -- The Rogers State Hillcats pulled away to a 16-3 win in game one, then completed doubleheader sweep with an 8-5 win in the second game Saturday afternoon (Mar. 5) at Evangel Field.

The Hillcats jumped on top with two runs in the first of the opener, but the Evangels came back with three runs in the bottom of the second by taking advantage of a pair of Hillcat errors.

Jeff Eubank started the inning with a double and scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by Elfry Abad, who was safe at first thanks to an error.  A fielders choice by Joe Moore tied the score and an RBI single by Eridani Dume scored Abad to put the Evangels on top.

An RBI single by Keith Poverud pulled the Hillcats even in the third and RSU then broke out with six runs in the fourth inning, due in large part to four errors in the inning.  Cade McKewon sparked the inning with a two-run triple.

Colton West hit a two-run homer in the fifth for the Hillcats and McKewon smashed a three-run homer in the sixth as part of a five-run inning that sealed the win for the Hillcats.

Grant Cosby pitched five innings and allowed one earned run and struck out four to pick up the victory.

The Hillcats again jumped in front in the nightcap with a run in the first and three more in the third for a 4-0 lead.

The Evangels responded in the bottom of the third as Jon Jon Lemos hit a sacrifice fly to score Emmanuel Jiminian and Dume singled home pinch runner Justin Rivera to cut the lead in half to 4-2.

RSU scored a pair of runs in the fifth to regain their four-run cushion, but Dume hit a two-run blast that again made it a two-run game.

After the Hillcats scored a run in the sixth and seventh to lead 8-4, the Evangels again tried to rally as Joe Moore drew a bases-loaded walk with one out that made it 8-5.

But reliever Jim Miner fanned the final two hitters to end the scoring threat.

Tyler Brown picked up the win in relief by tossing 3 1/3 innings and allowing two runs with three strikeouts.

Eric Sweeney tossed 4 2/3 innings for the Evangels, giving up four runs and striking out five.

David Rhoads went 3-of-4 at the plate and Dume drove in three runs to lead the Evangels offensively.

The Evangels will next host Southwestern Oklahoma State in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 8) starting at 1 p.m.
