Evangels defeat Wayland Baptist 5-3 in game two to salvage doubleheader split

Oklahoma City, Okla. -- The Mid-America Christian Evangels smacked three homers and knocked off the Wayland Baptist Pioneers 5-3 in the second game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon (April 1) at Evangel Field.  The Pioneers routed the Evangels 20-3 in the opener.

Adrian Bravo-Carmona went 2-of-4 and drove in two runs in the nightcap, with the first being an RBI single in the first that plated Eridani Dume that made it 1-0.

Elfrey Abad then led off the second with a towering solo homer for a two-run lead.

The Pioneers tied the score in the fourth with a pair of runs, one off an error and the other an RBI single by Aldo Mendez.

Dume put the Evangels right back on top with a single that scored Justin Rivera in the bottom of the inning and Bravo-Carmona added to the lead with a lead-off homer in the bottom of the fifth.

A bases-loaded walk in the sixth brought the Pioneers to within a run, but a solo homer from David Rhoads gave the Evangels an important insurance run.

Derek Allen then closed the door in the seventh behind a couple of great defensive plays by Emmanuel Jiminian and Luis Martinez.

Allen pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Sean Sanders to pick up the save.

Sanders was also solid on the hill, lasting 5 2/3 innings and giving up three earned runs and striking out five.

The opener started promising for the Evangels, with Jon Jon Lemos drilling a two-run homer in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead.

The Pioneers were scoreless through the first two frames but proceeded to light up the scoreboard from there, exploding for 20 runs over the next three innings.

Brian Embery capped a six-run third with a three-run homer and the Pioneers then sent 16 hitters to the plate in an 11-run fourth inning that put the game out of reach.

Marcus Limon was the winner for the Pioneers, going five innings and allowing three runs with 11 strikeouts.

The two schools will now play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon (Apr. 2) at Evangel Field in OKC.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
