Evangels stun No. 3 Stars, 8-7 at OCU

Oklahoma City, Okla. -- Jose Flores and David Rhoads combined for five hits and six RBI and the Mid-America Christian Evangels scored a pair of runs in the eighth to knock off the No. 3-ranked Oklahoma City Stars 8-7 Friday afternoon (Apr. 15) at Jim Wade Stadium at OCU.

The win is the program's first-ever over OCU.

The Evangels snapped a 6-6 tie in the eighth inning when Rhoads reached on an error that plated Martinez and then scored on an RBI single by Flores.

OCU made things interesting in the ninth as Scott Darlymple singled home Ruben Sosa to make it 8-7 and then loaded the bases with two outs following a walk to Austin Messerli.

But Derek Allen, in relief of starter Sean Sanders, induced a game-ending flyout by Chad Carman to finish off the victory.

Flores singled home the game's first run in the first inning before the Stars answered with RBI singles by Sosa and Mark Purser in the bottom of the second for a 2-1 lead.

Rhoads then hit a two-run homer in the third to put the Evangels back on top and three runs in the fifth gave MACU a 6-2 advantage.

The Stars pulled to within a run with three tallies in the fifth and tied the score on a solo homer by Miguel Beltran in the bottom of the sixth.

Allen worked 4 1/3 innings out of the bullpen, allowing two runs and striking out two to get the win.

Sanders had eight strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings, giving up five runs but only three earned.

The Evangels and Stars will now play the rubber game of the series tomorrow afternoon (Apr. 16) at 2 p.m. at Evangel Field in OKC.
