Evangels win fourth straight to snap No. 13 John Brown's eight-game winning streak with resounding 87-59 victory

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels used a stifling defensive effort to force 33 turnovers and snap the No. 13-ranked John Brown University Golden Eagles' eight-game winning streak with a convincing 87-59 victory in Sooner Athletic Conference action Thursday night (Feb. 16) at the Gaulke Activity Center.  The win extends the Evangels' winning streak to four games, their most consecutive conference victories since joining the SAC in 2007.

The win also keeps the Evangels one game out of the eighth and final spot in the SAC Postseason Tournament with three games left.

The Evangels (13-11, 8-11 SAC) jumped on the Golden Eagles early by scoring the first 11 points of the game behind threes from Cameron Langster and Charlie Shorter.

After JBU responded with 10 straight to cut the lead to one, the Evangels came right back with a 9-2 spurt to build the lead back to eight at the 7:04 mark of the first half.

The Evangels continued to stretch the lead as treys from Brandon Williams and Shorter made it 30-15 with 4:04 left in the opening half.

MACU went on to a 37-23 advantage going into the locker room.

Baskets by Andy Garcia and Adrian Miller to open the second half brought the Golden Eagles (21-6, 13-6 SAC) to within 10, but the Evangels then broke the game wide open with a 12-2 run to take a 20-point lead of 49-29 with 14:33 left.

The Evangels never let off the gas pedal from there, maintaining at least a 17-point lead the rest of the way.

Nine straight points from Camilo Valencia and three free throws by Reggie Davis over a two-minute span gave the Evangels their largest lead of the night at 84-55 with 1:41 remaining.

Valencia led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and also dished out five assists.  Shorter scored 18 and hit 10-of-12 from the charity stripe.  Langster had 14 and also had five assists, while George Haynes had 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds.  Shorter and Valencia recorded four steals to spark the Evangels' defensive effort.

Miller and EJ McWoods led the Golden Eagles with 13 points apiece, while Tucker Trumbo had 11.  Miller and Garcia each had six boards.

The Evangels were out-rebounded 36-31 overall, but held a 14-10 edge on the offensive glass.

MACU will next go for a season sweep of the No. 5-ranked Rogers State Hillcats on Saturday evening (Feb. 18) at 5 p.m. in Claremore, Okla.  The Evangels bested the Hillcats 73-67 back on Jan. 7 in OKC.
