OKLAHOMA CITY --
Jon Jon Lemos powered the Mid-America Christian University Evangels to a dramatic, 5-4 extra-inning victory over the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes in the opening game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 22) at James Curtis Field. The Coyotes then rebounded to take the second game from the Evangels, 9-4.
With the first game knotted at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Lemos smacked the first pitch he saw off reliever Tucker Neal over the fence for the walk-off victory.
The drama started before that as the Coyotes led 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth when an RBI single by
Nick Whetzell plated
Luis Martinez to tie the score.
Grant Middlebrooks came out of the bullpen to pick up the win by blanking the Coyotes over the last two innings.
Martinez and
Andrew Smith each collected two hits to lead the Evangels at the dish.
In the nightcap, the Coyotes jumped on top with a tally in the first before Martinez smashed a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to put the Evangels in front.
After Jeff Lucero sparked a three-run third inning with a two-run double,
Kevin Parsons answered with a two-run double of his own in the bottom of the third to even the score at 4-4.
It remained tied until the Coyotes broke it open with a five-run sixth inning to take control and pull away for the win.
Brad Thomas got the win for KWU with four shutout innings and four strikeouts.
The Evangels (3-4) will next open up play in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a three-game series at St. Gregory's beginning on Friday afternoon (Feb. 24) at 2 p.m. in Shawnee, Okla. The two teams will then play a doubleheader at MACU on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 25) starting at 1 p.m.
