Bacone pitching silents Evangels in doubleheader sweep

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Bacone College Warriors pitching staff limited the Mid-America Christian University Evangels to only four runs in sweeping a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 13) at James Curtis Field in OKC.  The Warriors took the first game 6-1 and then the second 10-3.

After the Evangels got on the board first in the opener on an RBI single by Luis Martinez that scored Shane Brinker, Antonio Horn smacked a two-run homer in the second to spark a three-run inning.

Colby Crawford then blanked the Warriors for the next four innings, only to have Horn go yard again in the seventh and Bacone scored two more runs to put it away.

Crawford struck out seven and walked seven, allowing five earned runs in the loss.

Eric Aguillard was masterful on the mound for the Warriors after giving up the run in the first, shutting out the Evangels over the next six innings to earn the win.

Martinez and Brinker each had two hits for the Evangels in the loss.

In the nightcap, the Warriors (16-9) got on the board with three runs in the second and then added another run in the fifth for a 4-0 lead.

The Warriors then put it away with six runs in the seventh that featured a two-run double by Steven Smith.  Bacone also benefited from an error and three hit batters in the inning.

MACU (3-18) avoided the shutout by scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh thanks to three errors that led to all three tallies being unearned.

A bright spot for the Evangels was a pair of scoreless frames by reliever Mat Owen and also a scoreless sixth inning by Blaine Garriott.

Johnson Kiska tossed four scoreless innings to get the win for the Warriors.

The Evangels will next begin a conference series with a doubleheader at Southern Nazarene on Thursday afternoon (Mar. 15) beginning at 1 p.m. in Bethany, Okla.  MACU will then host SNU in the series finale on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 17), also at 1 p.m.
