Plainview, Texas -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels notched their first Sooner Athletic Conference victory of the season by knocking off the Wayland Baptist University Pioneers 7-4 in the series finale Saturday afternoon (Mar. 24) in Plainview, Texas.
Jon Jon Lemos sparked the Evangels' offensive attack with a 3-4 effort at the plate with two RBI.
With the scored knotted at 1-1 in the third, Lemos blasted a two-run homer to cap a three-run inning.
Luis Martinez doubled home
Shane Brinker for the first run of the frame.
The Evangels (4-23, 1-14 SAC) added to their lead as
Kevin Parsons led off the fourth with a double and scored on a single by
Taylor Daniels. Daniels then stole second and crossed the plate when
Justin Rivera reached on a fielding error that made it 6-1.
It was 6-2 when Martinez hit a one-out double in the seventh and scored on an RBI single by
Joe Moore.
The Pioneers (12-20, 3-12 SAC) refused to go quietly though as Josh Chinni and Josh Carroll hit back-to-back homers with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to come within three runs. The blast was Chinni's second of the day, as he also went deep in the bottom of the second to tie the score at 1-1.
But
Blaine Garriott came on in relief of starter
Colby Crawford from that point and closed out the win by blanking the Pioneers over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Crawford got the win in a solid effort on the mound, allowing four earned runs with three strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings of work.
Martinez and Moore had two hits for the Evangels, while Daniels was 1-of-3 with two RBI. Daniels drove in the Evangels' first run of the day with a sacrifice fly that scored Moore in the top of the second.
The Evangels will next play a non-conference game at Friends University (Kan.) on Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 27) at 2 p.m. in Wichita, Kan.
