Wichita, Kan. -- The Friends University (Kan.) Falcons scored five unanswered runs, including two game-winning tallies in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Mid-America Christian University Evangels 9-8 in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 27) in Wichita, Kan.
After the Evangels picked up a run in the top of the seventh to go up 8-4, things went downhill as the Falcons battled back with consecutive doubles to lead off the bottom of the seventh by Becker Sankey and Scott McNally to make it 8-5. A bases-loaded walk later in the inning made it a two-run game.
Sankey again came through in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single that brought the Falcons within 8-7.
The bottom of the ninth then began on a sour note for the Evangels as a hit by pitch, sacrifice bunt and back-to-back walks loaded the bases with only one out. A sacrifice fly by Garrett Heath tied the score and a wild pitch put the game-winning run on third along with a runner on second.
McNally then won it for the Falcons with a walk-off single that plated Domenick Romero.
An RBI single by
Joe Moore got the Evangels on the board in the top of the first and MACU then exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth for a 7-0 cushion.
But it didn't take long for the Falcons to respond, as a three-run double by Sankey sparked a four-run fifth inning.
Ryan Rathbun and
Andrew Smith began the game in good fashion for the Evangels, as each pitched two scoreless innings and combined for five strikeouts.
Moore and Brinker each drove in two runs to lead the Evangels' offense.
The Evangels will next host a three-game series against No. 11-ranked Lubbock Christian, beginning with a doubleheader on Friday afternoon (Mar. 30) at 1 p.m.
