Salina, Kan. -- The Mid-America Christian University Evangels were out-slugged in a pair of games at the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 6) in Salina, Kan. The Evangels dropped the opener 11-5 and then the nightcap, 15-9.
Luis Martinez did his part in the first game to give the Evangels a chance, going 2-of-3 with an RBI single in the first and a two-run homer in the fifth. But a seven-run third inning for the Coyotes, spearheaded by a three-run double by Trey Ralston, broke the game open.
Martinez again put the Evangels on top in the second game with a sacrifice fly in the first, only to have the Coyotes explode for five runs in the first and three more in the second inning for a seven-run cushion.
The Evangels (3-13) got back into it with a three-run homer by
Kevin Parsons in the fourth inning and then a grand slam by
Shane Brinker sparked a five-run fifth that made it a one-run game at 10-9.
But the Coyotes (6-5) put it away with a run in the bottom of the fifth and four more tallies in the bottom of the sixth.
The Evangels will now resume Sooner Athletic Conference action with a stern test at No. 1-ranked Oklahoma City. The series, orginally scheduled to begin on Thursday night (Mar. 8), will now begin tomorrow night (Mar. 7) at Oklahoma City University due to rain in the forecast on Saturday. The Evangels will again be at OCU Thursday for the second game before wrapping up the series Friday afternoon (Mar. 9) at James Curtis Field at MACU.
